No sound with Mint 11 or Mint 12

Postby TrawlerJoe on Fri Dec 09, 2011 9:25 am

Hi,
Looking for some help: I can't get any sound on my desktop machine. Can anyone help with this? I'd love to get this resolved and make Mint my main OS from now on. This is with 64-bit Katya (Mint 11), but I have the same exact problem if I install Lisa (Mint 12). My machine is an HP Omni 220 quad ("all-in-one"), i7, 8GB RAM, ATI 6450.

Things I've tried:
- I added myself to the "audio" and the "pulse-access" groups using the user/group manager.
- I tried adding each of these (one at a time) to /etc/modprobe.d/alsa-base.conf, with a reboot after each. None helped...
options snd-hda-intel index=0 model=auto
options snd-hda-intel index=0 model=hp
options snd-hda-intel index=0 model=touchsmart

Here's all the info I can think of to provide... let me know if there's something else needed. Also, I uploaded my alsa information here.

Thanks!
-Joe

FWIW, sound works through the headphone jack, but not through the speakers built in to the monitor.

Suggestions, anyone?

As per HP who is sound card manufaturer? In your installation there is a conflict.

Code: Select all
joe@mint-main ~ $ cat /proc/asound/cards
0 [PCH            ]: HDA-Intel - HDA Intel PCH
HDA Intel PCH at 0xfe700000 irq 51
1 [Generic        ]: HDA-Intel - HD-Audio Generic
                      HD-Audio Generic at 0xfe640000 irq 52

Code: Select all

Well, all I have per HP is "Integrated sound". In Windows 7, sound is fine, device manager shows "IDT High Definition Audio CODEC" as Default Device, and AMD HDMI Output as not selected. That fits with what I see in the Mint sound settings panel -- it shows two output devices, with the Intel device selected and the audio out on the AMD video card NOT selected.

What do you mean by "there is a conflict" -- and any suggestions on how to fix it? Thanks.

Is your hp model HP Omni 220-1080qd. It has IDT 92HD91 audio chipset which is not supported by ALSA yet check http://www.alsa-project.org/main/index.php/Matrix:Vendor-IDT

if you confirm above, we can try fooling the system and see if it works.
Code: Select all
sudo  gedit    /etc/modprobe.d/alsa-base.conf

at the bottom of the file add
options snd-hda-intel model = ref

Reboot.

Don't quote me on it ... been awhile since I messed with alsamixer. If your headphone jack is working, would think alsamixer is getting along ok with your integrated sound. Try muting the headphones and seeing if the speakers work then.

ie: terminal ... type alsamixer.

left/right keys to navigate, up/down keys to adjust volume and the m key to mute/unmute summin, esc key to exit. In your case, muting the headphones may do the trick. Mentioned don't quote me etc ... But when the headphones are unmuted, regular speakers might not work. Could always try playing with alsamixers settings. Doesn't work, you're no worse off.

Yes, that's the model. Ah, thanks for pointing me to the alsa-project.org page. That'll give me more to read tomorrow at work ;-)

I tried "options snd-hda-intel model=ref" in my alsa-base.conf, and rebooted, but no luck. Alsamixer included more options, but I couldn't get sound even out of the headphones jack at that point, so I put it back to "options snd-hda-intel model=auto". With auto, I still get headphone sound, and speaker-test runs, but nothing from the speakers...

I also tried muting and disconnecting the headphones, but no luck there either. Damn, I was hoping it was that simple.

Code: Select all
joe@mint-main ~ $ speaker-test -c2 -twav

speaker-test 1.0.24.2

Playback device is default
Stream parameters are 48000Hz, S16_LE, 2 channels
WAV file(s)
Rate set to 48000Hz (requested 48000Hz)
Buffer size range from 96 to 1048576
Period size range from 32 to 349526
Using max buffer size 1048576
Periods = 4
was set period_size = 262144
was set buffer_size = 1048576
 0 - Front Left
 1 - Front Right
Time per period = 5.150745

Let's try one more fooling around, reverse the bit..
Code: Select all
sudo gedit /etc/modprobe.conf

add the following line..
snd-hda-intel  ac97_quirk=hp_only

Reboot

Thanks again for helping. Sorry for the delay.

So, that file doesn't exist on my system. I created it (just using gedit) with the line you provided above. No harm, but no benefit... not sure if that's the right way to create it... maybe it should be generated by something?

Heh, maybe the easiest solution is to get some external speakers... though it sure would be nice to avoid that.

If you have time can you post output of this,
Code: Select all
aplay -l

Note down the device and sub-device number for your speaker. Now play a wav file on this device with the following command and see if speaker works.

Code: Select all
sudo aplay -D plughw:1,3  test.wav

here device number is 1 and subdevice is 3 and test is the file

Plays through headphone jack only :(

It just occurred to me... this machine came with "Beats Audio" (the Dr. Dre stuff), and I wonder if that's causing a problem. Everything is working fine in Windows, and my understanding is that beats is a software-only equalizer for Windows. But who knows...

Please delete the file created earlier i.e. /etc/modprobe.conf

Please add the following line to /etc/modprobe.d/alsa-base.conf and reboot

Code: Select all

No luck. Same as above... no soundcards found.

I also played around with the Beats software in Windows. No obvious issues there... there's a UI for selecting the sound output (speakers/headphones), and an equalizer. I did notice that plugging in headphones automatically selects the headphones. But otherwise, the main speakers remain selected, and the test function outputs sound.

Have you purged pulseaudio or it's still there? Please go ahead and purge pulseaudio.

Purge all references to snd-hda-intel from /etc/modprobe.d/alsa-base.conf.

Try by adding..
options snd-hda-intel model=hp position_fix=1

do a
sudo alsa force-reload

after changes

Thanks much for sticking with this. I'm not sure I'll have time to pursue this more until next week, but I'll give it a go and post back as soon as I have more info.

I did just now, and it didn't help.

'options snd-hda-intel ac97_quirk=hp_only' had no effect

'options snd-hda-intel model=hp position_fix=1' resulted in no sound from either speakers or headphones

Unfortunately this machine seems to have more problems than just the sound. I think it will be going back to HP.
