mintupdate-launcher
Mint 12 & MATE
Since I have installed Mint 12 I have had absolutely zero available update notifications. The only way I ever know if I have updates to install is if I manually run the updater. mintUpdater is activated on my startup list. It is also set to refresh every 2 hours.
As an example. I last did a manual update on Dec. 13. Today, the 20th, I did another update. I had 110 updates available. Common sense tells me all 110 updates didn't just become available within the past 24 hours and I am having to believe I am getting no alert or notification when updates actually become available.
Whatever, I never get visual notifications of available updates. Never. Is this normal in Mint? I ask because in Ubuntu my updater was set up to check daily and it notified via an updater icon that popped up on my panel whenever updates were found. I have not had that experience even once while using Mint 12 and MATE.

That's correct AFAICT, you might want to check you are using the best download server in Software Sources. Other than that and checking the update manager levels 1-3 are set to Visible and Safe in preferences, and the check time is not set to something in days, I have no further suggestions.

gedit ~/.config/autostart/mintupdate-launcher.desktop[Desktop Entry]
Name=mintupdate-launcher
Comment=Show and install available updates
Exec=mintupdate-launcher
Encoding=UTF-8
Terminal=false
Type=Application
StartupNotify=false

We could add a launcher to the autosart folder as a workaround.

It should be working if you see this notification icon in the tray. The shield icon gets the blue "i" thingy to notify you of new updates.
