[Resolved] No Notifications Of Available Updates.

Mint 12 & MATE

Since I have installed Mint 12 I have had absolutely zero available update notifications. The only way I ever know if I have updates to install is if I manually run the updater. mintUpdater is activated on my startup list. It is also set to refresh every 2 hours.

As an example. I last did a manual update on Dec. 13. Today, the 20th, I did another update. I had 110 updates available. Common sense tells me all 110 updates didn't just become available within the past 24 hours.

Whatever, I never get notifications of available updates. Never. Is this normal in Mint? I ask because in Ubuntu my updater was set up to check daily and it notified me whenever updates were found.

Just what kind of notification are your expecting? Mintupdate notifies by changing the shield icon to one with a blue exclamation mark.

That's the point. There is never a shield icon until I manually initiate an update. Then I get a shield icon and it remains after I update.

Let me try to clarify this a bit. Let's say I am using Ubuntu. I'm doing various tasks on my machine. All of the sudden the updater icon displays on my panel informing me I have updates available. That absolutely never happens with Mint. The only way I ever become aware of available updates is if I manually run the update process. Otherwise there is never any visual awareness of the updater at all. If I were to ignore doing a manual update for 2 months I'd never have a clue that there are actually updates available for download and installation during that 2 month period.

What is the command line of the mint updater in your Startup Applications?

No alert when updates are available.

Postby Trapper on Wed Dec 21, 2011 10:33 am

I asked this question in the Mint Tools forum but I am going to ask it here too because it seems other people are not experiencing this and it's starting to make me consider this may be a MATE only situation.

Mint 12 & MATE

Since I have installed Mint 12 I have had absolutely zero available update notifications. The only way I ever know if I have updates to install is if I manually run the updater. mintUpdater is activated on my startup list. It is also set to refresh every 2 hours.

Common sense tells me all 110 updates didn't just become available within the past 24 hours and I am having to believe I am getting no alert or notification when updates actually become available.

Whatever, I never get visual notifications of available updates. Never. Is this normal in Mint? I ask because in Ubuntu my updater was set up to check daily and it notified via an updater icon that popped up on my panel whenever updates were found. I have not had that experience even once while using Mint 12 and MATE.

That's correct AFAICT, you might want to check you are using the best download server in Software Sources. Other than that and checking the update manager levels 1-3 are set to Visible and Safe in preferences, and the check time is not set to something in days, I have no further suggestions.

It's all set up as you indicate here. Obviously, the general Mint populous is not experiencing this. It's also obvious it shouldn't be happening to me. That's why I started another thread in the MATE forum.

It appears that mintUpdate just isn't being launched by MATE at startup.
We could add a launcher to the autosart folder as a workaround.
Code: Select all
gedit ~/.config/autostart/mintupdate-launcher.desktop

Code: Select all
[Desktop Entry]
Name=mintupdate-launcher
Comment=Show and install available updates
Exec=mintupdate-launcher
Encoding=UTF-8
Terminal=false
Type=Application
StartupNotify=false

Save the file, and check if that resolves the issue.

same issue here, the mintupdate-launcher is in startup application applet but I have no icon on the panel in the notification area, so I have to run it manually.

Waiting for updates on LMDE aswell, I think they are busy working on this "Cinnamon" project I read about on Phoronix, trying to make Gnome3 look like Gnome2 through shell extensions.

Okay, I did this and my assumption is that I won't actually see anything until an update comes available. I'll wait and see if that's the case. I do note the new launcher in my Startup Applications. I do not notice anything when I run ps.

It should be working if you see this notification icon in the tray. The shield icon gets the blue "i" thingy to notify you of new updates.

Oh, I have never gotten the tray icon unless I initiated the update manually. Then a blank shield comes up while checking, it changes to ! when it finds updates and a green check mark when updates are installed. If I log out and back in after a manual check I will never see the icon again until I initiate a manual update. I have absolutely never had the updater inform me of available updates on its own. I even had to initiate the initial update after installation of Mint 12. That was a day or so after installing. I knew then that something was screwy.

I haven't received any update notifications since inserting the .desktop file you provided either. Let's see. That was on the 22. Let me do a manual check now. ...... Nope, no updates are available. So, I still have no idea if I will be automatically informed or not. I'll just keep waiting. I don't expect a lot of activity during the holiday season. There's usually not.

As far as having any sort of updater icon in my tray any time I boot up .... nope.

This is an update. It's Jan. 6th now and I still have never received even one notification of available updates. The only way I become aware of updates is if I manually run the updater. I haven't checked for updates for many days. I did a manual check a while ago. There were 15 available.

I am having an issue with this as well. I figured it may be related to Cinnamon in some way but if I click on update manager to refresh nothing happens. If I get it to check for updates, it does so but the icon then removes itself from the panel. I have been checking for updates daily anyway via terminal but when I saw this thread, I figured it may be a bug or something. I'll keep checking this thread in hopes someone has a fix :wink:

Trapper, open synaptic and make sure you have both packages installed for update manager. I did not and now it is working fine :wink:

What would those 2 packages be? I ask because I have several installed that apply to update.
