questions about kernels

Postby podagee on Sat Dec 24, 2011 8:22 am

okay in mint 12 we start with the 3.0.0-12 then after doing a quick dist-upgrade we get the 3.0.0-14 kernel.okay i've installed the 3.2.0-rc4.i have noticed absolutely no difference with the kernels except that 3.0.0-14 likes to keep my cpu temperature somewhat higher than the rest at about 50 C.other than that the only difference ive seen was the plymouth theme while booting doesnt pause when its loaded.if no difference is really made whats the point of upgrading kernels if it shows really no difference???
i know people say its for certain lapops to resolve overheating, but, can someone tell me how i could benefit from this?

Kernel updates provide support for new hardware and filesystems, bug fixes, driver updates and 'may' help with boot speeds and other issues but can also be regressive and make things worse. They are not necessarily a panacea for fixing problems or making things better.

"If it ain't broke, don't fix it."

As long as the kernel you have works well with your hardware, the only reason to upgrade is personal choice. Do you want to run the newest kernel or one that you know works well on your system?

Keep in mind that when you upgrade to a new kernel version, the old kernel is not removed. It is left in place as a fallback in case you experience problems with the new kernel. You always have that protection if the new kernel breaks something irreparably.
