Occasionally 20 pages for "new posts"?

I use this shortcut to show me the new posts on this board.

Since I visit this forum regularly numerous times a day, the "new posts" are kept at a minimum.
Occasionally, I will visit using that link and I will have 20 pages of "new posts".
It is very odd and I cannot track down the source of the issue. Logging out and back in does nothing to help.

I then delete all board cookies and log back in and "new posts" therefore becomes zero (until some new posts are made).
This procedure only works until it happens again, then I delete board cookies again...

Any ideas?
