The only way to end it is by agreeing to kill the process as it is not responding anymore. I'm using the advised repositories for "testing". I couldn't find any thread/post about a hanging update-manager, so I'm trying here to find anyone with an idea about what might be wrong. Thanks.

Well, actually for the Mint tools to work properly you should stick to the incoming/latest repos. They are already somewhat behind Debian 'testing' repos so maybe that's why the Update Manager broke (I don't use Mint, just Debian but this is kind of a common sense answer).

Ok, I'm always confused about what version I'm running. Here are my repos:

deb http://debian.linuxmint.com/latest/security testing/updates main contrib non-free
deb http://debian.linuxmint.com/latest/multimedia testing main non-free

Well, is that "latest" or "testing". Looks like I mixed the two and it is "latest" not "testing", right?

Ok, I found out:

- it is Latest
- repos are fine

It's working again. I hat a lot of notes and more lines in my resources.list. I deleted everything excerpt the 4 lines stated in the post before. Result: the Update Manager doesn't hang anymore.
One question remains: what Update Pack is on my system already? The Update Manager states: "Current Update Pack available: 3". What does that mean? Is it already on my system or do I still have to install it?

So I guess I'm not using any Update Pack. But the Update Manager finishes always with "Your system is up to date".
Maybe I don't need any Update Pack? I'm a litte confused. Is everything alright or do I have to do something manually.

without knowing exactly what was there (specially the others repos in there) we are a bit in the dark, but my guess is that somewhere there in the middle you had testing repos, you update your system in the meantime, and now mintupdate can't recognize the UP in use in the system;

my advise, if everything is working fine, keep it that way, all will resolved with UP4, if any error occur (like you want to install a program and get a msg saying that you can't because of unmet dependencies) you know why that happens

I think MUD is a good name for it, I belive it destroyed an install of mine! I'm a forgiving person, so I've re-installed LMDE with a different version, tried the Mint Updater Debian again, .... it's working as I type .... I'll see if I like it better after the update! I had forgotten about smxi, haven't used it since sidux, I'll go check it out, but I have always liked to use the CLI way of updating/upgrading.

Thanks for the advise. I have no problem with waiting for UP4 as long the Update Manager is able to recognize it and to pull it in.

On ANOTHER system I've just installed the current LMDE-release (Sept.2011).

The repos of the freshly installed system are:

Maybe they should be checked first, before starting any update/upgrade-process. I'm confused about finding "latest" and "testing" repos mixed in here. Is that alright?

Due to another botched update (startup blackouts for 10 minutes or so), and, of course a subsequent re-install, I am only using

apt-get update && apt-get upgrade

for now, which is working fine for me. I'll be holding off on using the updater until all the bugs are worked out, since I'm not a computer geek by nature or by experience

My sources are the same and these work fine. I've commented out the ones that I tried and don't work.

I*'m no geek, but I believe that you will get an answer from someone that indicates that the linuxmint repo that shows 'latest testing' is just a naming convention that has to be used or something. The last two repos, if you went thru the MUD would be automatically changed to 'linuxmint latest' with update 3, I think. Also, I think that you can change the 'latest' to 'incoming' and you will get updates that are more in line with Debian 'testing' repos without the LMDE team fine-tuning them to work better with LMDE. I may be talking out of school here, but I think that is what I have read on several forum comments and the blogs, etc.

I've used italics here to show that this is my understanding of what I have read, not necessarily talking for LMDE

msbin, if you didn't update this newly installed system yet good
take a look at this topic viewtopic.php?f=185&t=82346 where you are going to see:
- the correct (if you want to stay in sync with the UP) sources.list that you should use from now on (and before any update)
- the fix for one most probably error (gstreamer) that is going to popup during the update process
- if you're using a 32bit kernel make sure (after the update is finish) to install the headers for the new kernel

- latest and incoming are virtually the same, with the only difference being that UP reaches incoming a few days sooner for testing porposes

... the UpdateManager still offers to update "mintupdate-debian" 1.0.3 to 1.0.4.

Is it advisable to do that or should I work with the terminal instead ?

for these big updates i would go with the command line update (you have more control)

What I've done so far:

0) Fresh install of LMDE (Sept2011)
1) sudo apt-get update && sudo apt-get dist-upgrade
2) sudo dpkg -i --force-overwrite /var/cache/apt/archives/gstreamer0.10-plugins-bad_0.10.22-3_i386.deb
3) sudo apt-get update && sudo apt-get dist-upgrade
4) sudo apt-get install linux-headers-3.0.0-1-686-pae

Update Manager now tells me the system is up to date,
although the UP-Info states that UpdatePackage 2 is still used and UP3 is available.

What UP is under the hood now?
