I think you might be in the minority regarding Gnome 3 usability
I think Windows has thrived so long because its interface makes sense on a computer, it is intuitive and user friendly. Despite there being so many desktop interfaces, there really are only so many ways you can use a desktop. And Windows pretty much nailed it with XP.
My wife and daughter both got tablets for Christmas, so I got to use an Android and Ipad tablet, and I decided I'm not a tablet guy. But I tried to imagine myself ever using Unity on a tablet, and that idea is a joke. I tried to imagine Gnome 3 on a tablet, and I can see that. But even with my daughter's Ipad she is using an add on keyboard, so I'm thinking I might as well stick to my netbook. And I've noticed that my wife only uses her tablet about 1/4 as much as she uses her netbook.
