I read solutions posted by zerozero how to solve this problem, tried them and they did not work on my system.
This is a fresh install of 64bit mint debian xcfe on a 6 core processor.
Unlike others, zerozero's solution has not worked for me and I, for one, am still unable to update LMDE Xcfe.
I ran the two commands inxi -r and sudo apt-get update && sudo apt-get dist-upgrade
