Many things that are easy to install and run on traditional Mint or Ubuntu versions are trickier to get right on LMDE. TOR is one of them. Here is how I finally got it right (my repositories are set to "squeeze", by the way, not "testing")

Don't use the TOR or Vidalia versions from the Mint/Debian repositories. Go to the Torproject website and faithfully follow the instructions to add the torproject.org repository to your
/etc/apt/sources.list file.

Now install TOR and Vidalia with apt-get or Synaptic.

If you are using the ageing Iceweasel version 3.5.16 my LMDE system ended up with you can download Torbutton from the Mint LMDE repository BUT BEWARE: you might get Polipo also installed and this mustn't happen.

Check your system and see if Polipo somehow got itself installed. If it is, uninstall it before you do anything else.

Reboot and then start Vidalia. Check the control panel and see if a connection is established. If it does, then your system should be OK

Start Iceweasel, which should now have a Torbutton. Click to enable TOR. Then check
Iceweasel's Preferences -> Advanced -> Network -> Settings
You should find the Socks host set to 127.0.0.1, no proxy for 127.0.0.1 .
No other proxies should be set.

Address your browser to http://www.123myip.co.uk/ and confirm that the ISP address shown is not your normal one.

Hope this helps.

No reason why you shouldn't use Tor with Polipo.

apt-get install tor vidalia xul-ext-torbutton

Then either install privoxy or polipo, either one is fine to use. The Tor wiki has various settings in either one you need to tweak.

apt-get install privoxy
or
apt-get install polipo

Using tor with Polipo - http://www.pps.jussieu.fr/~jch/software/polipo/tor.html

Tor Project: Debian/Ubuntu Instructions - https://www.torproject.org/docs/debian.html.en

NOTE1: Proxy pipelining may not be well supported by Privoxy. For this reason, you may want to install Polipo and use that instead of Privoxy to get the performance benefits of pipelining. If you use Torbutton (which you should, if you want any anonymity at all), all of the Tor-relevant privacy scrubbing features of Privoxy are no longer necessary.

NOTE2: Do not use page prefetching. Disable this if it is enabled. Prefetching is a speculative feature, which assumes that you will read the pages referenced by the links in the current page you are viewing. This places undue load on the Tor network and clog your circuits with unnecessary traffic. Its unlikely you will read all the pages referenced by the current page, especially in the case of search engines results
If you use Firefox download the Torbutton from the Tor site.

Well, that's what I thought when I started. In fact I've had several TOR/Privoxy and TOR/Polipo combinations running in the past under OpenSuSE and Ubuntu. It's just this time I just couldn't get it to work under LMDE. That's why I went back to the Torproject guys and did it their way, which is working fine. In fact I quite like Vidalia's natty control panel.

The basic difference between Vidalia and Privoxy / Polipo is that Polipo and Privoxy are essentially HTTP proxies whereas TOR/Vidalia is a SOCKS proxy.

I've noted your threads. Do you actually have a TOR/Polipo setup running on your LMDE box?

Best wishes for a happy 2012!
