[SOLVED] to update or not to update

Postby ERwan on Sun Jan 01, 2012 4:38 pm

Hi there.

- mintupdate says there is nothing to update.
- synaptics says I can update some packages (foomatic-db-engine, gstramer0.10-ffmepeg, libavcodec53, mplayer, lc, vlc-nox, vlc-plugin-notify, vlc-plugin-pulse)

So my questions are :
- Why this difference ?
- Which should I trust ?

Trust the mintupdate. If you update the packages you mentioned via synaptic it can cause trouble because of dependencies.
If your system works fine, you shouldn't need this updates.

Its because mintUpdate have an update level (with the number 1-5) and synaptic doesn't. you can find the explanation on the edit > preferences
mint update will update the safe package, so if you mark the level 4 as visible but not safe, it will become visible but wont get updated.
ERwan wrote:- Which should I trust ?

you can trust both of them, the choice is up to you. On mint main edition, its really safe to do all upgrade (because unlike debian testing, the package on main edition can be considered as "stable") On LMDE, for safety reason, maybe the update on mint update was safer.

Back again, it's up to you.

hi,
there's something "wrong" <-so to say, with your sources.list, UP3 only has foomatic-db-engine pkg in that situation;
can you please open a terminal and post here the output of
Code: Select all
inxi -r

and check this viewtopic.php?f=185&t=82346 to see if your repos are according

Thanks, Gerd50 and lahirdenganselamat, for your answers. It's more clear for me now.

zerozero, it seems that my apt sources do not feet the recommended ones :

Code: Select all
deb http://packages.linuxmint.com/ debian main upstream import
deb http://debian.linuxmint.com/latest testing main contrib non-free
deb http://security.debian.org/ testing/updates main contrib non-free
deb http://www.debian-multimedia.org testing main non-free

If I understand well, I should replace them by the following :
Code: Select all
deb http://packages.linuxmint.com/ debian main upstream import
deb http://debian.linuxmint.com/latest testing main contrib non-free
deb http://debian.linuxmint.com/latest/security testing/updates main contrib non-free
deb http://debian.linuxmint.com/latest/multimedia testing main non-free

Do I understand well ?
I guess I'll have to check mintupdate after (?)
Is is safe for a newbie to switch sources ?

ERwan,
yes, you should change your sources.list (of course be careful when editing the file, but anyway is just a text file), otherwise multimedia and security will be out of sync with the rest of your repos and this kind of issues would appear (and get worst).
