Ultumix Standard 0.0.1.2 Released !

Postby Ultumix on Sat Jan 05, 2008 9:52 pm

Hey it works! remastersys finally worked for me. After getting around the 4.0GB threshold problem I sucessfully remastered your distro. It now uses the kmenu instead and has a more Windows User Friendly Interface (in my opinion and others). When I tried to get the people in my group to try Ultumix they hated the Tasty Menu and they could not find anything. So I decided to revamp the whole thing. Also I managed to install a cinelerra Video Editor. Don't ask me how I don't want to do it again! The final step was sudo apt-get -f install. That made cinelerra finally install right.

My biggest problem now is eliminating bloatware so that I can fit all of the games on the Ultimate Edition. Then I can release a package backup DVD also so that users will be able to add the missing packages with a second DVD but first I have to get it smaller than 4GBs.

Disregarding the readme file you can get it to install fine if you just enter owner for the full name and user name durring install. :) owner is the default password. Root is set up and root is the default password.

AN issue with 0.0.1.2

Postby Ultumix on Mon Jan 07, 2008 3:30 am

One issue with 0.0.1.2 is that after you install it even if you specify settings durring install everything is exactly the same as before I remastered it. So this means your password will be owner and your root password will be root. DO NOT CHANGE THE OWNER FOLDER! You can change the owner password or root password at any time if you wish.

Please let me know what you think of this OS. Thanks.

Uhhh did you use the dist or backup part of remasterys?

Because if you used the backup part, than yes, no one will be able to change the username and password during install, because that is how remastersys was made.

I used the backup because I wanted it that way as far as saving the home folder. This actually is a good thing but it might confuse some. Oh well.

If you just wanted the home folder, just copy its contents into /etc/skel (make sure they are owned by root in the group root).
Then, when your livedvd/cd is built, it will have all your settings, but you will be able to change the username and password in the installer.

Seeing this post on the Ultumix forum, they are in it for the money and not to further this OS. Is there a way to stop this hijacking?

Fist off I started making Ultumix for Windows users to just use. Thats all.

This just isn't true at all. To tell you the truth here is how it happened. I started making Ultumix from PCLinuxOS. I revised it a lot. Then Edwin found it and started using it. I didn't know who Edwin was but I liked his style. So then just a week or two ago right before I was ready to put out 0.0.1.2 Edwin informed me that the "group" wanted these computers and that he had talked them into using my OS. GREAT! finally some income in my life! Would you not jump at the chance too? I think it's great! What if all the schools in the US came to you and said that they wanted to use Mint on their PCs and test it out and if they liked it they wanted all the schools in the US to use it. Would you not indulge in it as well? I see this as a blessing.

I promised myself and others Ultumix will never go commercial even though many people think I should sell it. If I was in it for the money I would have sold it like SUSE, Red hat, Xandros, or Linspire. I'm not like those guys.

P.S. I could donate some of that money to the Linux Mint community. Maybe even enough to get you guys to help me.

The code is open source, so he can use it how he likes, that's part of the philosophy of open source. If he wants to use Mint as a base to make money off then he is perfectly entitled to that.

Where there might be an issue is him using "Mint" as part of the distributions name. I'm guessing Mint is copyright of Clem and he therefore gets to decide who can and cant use it. If I was Clem I would step in here and sort this out, because its only going to lead to confusion for people.

In fact, when I read the announcement headline at a glance I thought Mint KDE had finally been released, then I read it properly and realised it was some random guys version of a KDE based Mint. I think that is the damaging part. The fact that this could be confused with an official sanctioned community version of Mint when its not.

In fact the more I think about it the more I think its bad that someone else is using Mint in the name of their unaffiliated, unofficial version of the distro. I'm gunna forward this post onto Clem.

In the mean time, what can you do if you don't want to support this distro? Just ignore the guys posts.

Hi,

We had a private conversation and I mentioned the issue about the name. I'm happy to see Mint remastered and new distributions based on it (whether it's Ultumix or Pyrolinux or any future one) but as you stressed out, the name is an issue and I would like these distributions to maintain their own branding and avoid using the name "Linux Mint".

Right and I completely agree with this. I wish I knew how to redo the GRUB and SPLASH in Mint to take out the branding but I don't. If anyone wants to help me on that one by telling me about a tool or something that does that I would appreciate it. I also understand the GRUB must not be tampered with as far as the commands that are entered in the menu options during start up or it won't boot. So I'm a little confused.

you CAN change the name in Grub, the file is located at /boot/grub/menu.lst there are entrys at the bottom that list everything, i changed mine to say a dif message, so I know this is possible.

You'll need to invest time and research into making your own distribution. I'll give you quick hints: usplash needs to be repackaged (you need to maintain your own version of it to rebrand it) and grub can be modified in a file called update-grub (search the filesystem for its location, it depends on editions.. usually in /sbin). But these are technical details of how to make Ultumix and for this you'll need to do your own research, build your own chain and repositories and all... you'll need to learn how to package things up, make isos, etc... I wish you luck with this but I will be strict on the branding. No matter how long it takes to rebrand it, you shouldn't release Ultumix with any piece of Linux Mint branding material (splash screens, logos, names..etc). It's a very important issue for me, for users and for everybody.

Your right. I am going to set back for a wile and take some time before putting out 0.0.1.3. I'm really going to do some homework and right now I'm trying to employ an X Microsoft programmer who got me started in Linux in the first place. He quit when he found out about Project Longhorn. IE Vista, DRM, Trusted Computing.

Glad to see you're "sitting back for a while" to soak in some learning. :) The reason I use Linux -I've found- is that the learning never, ever ends.

Good luck with your future Minty releases.
