Quote from clem about Mint 12 in virtual box :

Make sure to configure your virtual machine as follows:
Go to Machine->Settings->Display
Give the virtual machine as much Memory Video as possible.
Tick the checkbox "Enable 3D Acceleration"

If video memory not enough it will not run gnome shell. Try give much more memory video

If I enable 3D Acceleration then all I see when I log in is a totally black screen:( I'm using VirtualBox 4.1.8 and my video card is an NVidia GeForce 9600 GT which has 3d Acceleration. I'm using the NVidia accelerated graphics driver marked as (Recommended) in the "Additional Drivers" dialogue in Ubuntu 10.10 x64 and the Guest Additions drivers provided with the Linux Mint DVD. I've put the VM's Video Memory to maximum (128MB) and still I get a black screen in Cinnamon session. This is really frustrating as I want to see if I can migrate to Mint from Ubuntu 10.10 (yes another Unity and Gnome 3 Shell avoider).

VB Setup is:-
Host: Ubuntu 10.10 x64 PC 12GB Ram 4 Procs, NVidia GeForce 9600 GT.
Guest: Linux Mint 12 x64 with Cinnamon desktop.
VB version: 4.1.8
VM Setup (relevant bits):-
General:Basic: OS: Linux, Version: Ubunut (64 bit)
System:Motherboard: Memory: 2048, Chipset:PIIX3, Enable IO APIC, Hardware Clock, Enable Absolute Pointing device
System:Processor: 2 CPU's, Exec Cap:100%, Enable PAE/NX
System:Acceleration: Enable VT-x/AMD-V, Enable Nested Paging
Display: Memory: 128MB, Monitor Count:1, Enable 3D Acceleration
Storage: SATA Controller, Type: AHCI, Port Count:1
Guest Additions as supplied on Linux Mint 12 DVD

I'm just wondering if running a 64 bit guest in a 64 bit host is the issue here.

Any advice to get this going would be greatly appreciated.

Craig, I'm having a similar problem with Mint 12 running in Parallels 6 on OSX. Video set to 3D enabled with 256MB. inxi run and showing Direct Rendering Yes. When I login with Cinnamon selected I just get a standard desktop. Wondering where things went wrong. It is surely a VM issue, but what?

Direct Rendering Yes does not prove that 3D acceleration is working. You need to look at the GLX Renderer; if it is Rasterizer software rendering is used instead of your graphics card. Cinnamon does not yet work with software rendering.

I also have the same problem with Cinnamon and VirtualBox. I have 3D enabled, and installed drivers.

My renderer is not "Rasterizer", as seen from the output below:
Code: Select all
$ inxi -G
Graphics:  Card: InnoTek Systemberatung VirtualBox Graphics Adapter
           X.Org 1.10.4 drivers ati unloaded: fbdev,vesa Resolution 1918x1018@60.0hz
           GLX Renderer Chromium GLX Version 2.1 Chromium 1.9

If I run "cinnamon --replace" the screen goes gray for a second then black, and the "machine" no longer respond to events and I have to forcibly power off.

Mint 12 freshly installed and updated. VirtualBox 4.1.8.
