I am new to this forum. I have been running arch linux for some time on my laptop and wanted to use a different distro for the desktop. I wanted a stable system and decided to use the 201012 LMDE ISO(x64), tracking squeeze repos as per the community tutorial. My system specs:
AMD Athlon X2 2.0 Ghz x64
2 GB RAM
512 MB nvidia 8600GT
Asus M2V-TVM motherboard
I used unetbootin to boot LMDE off a USB drive. On arriving at the live desktop i clicked on the installer and as i was entering my details, the desktop hung up on me and I had to do a hard reset as the keyboard shortcuts did not work. On reboot, the freezing repeated itself, but at different points of time (once even before the desktop came up). Every time this happens, I hear a beep from my CPU speaker.
I googled a bit and used the "nomodeset" switch to boot into the desktop and finished the installation smoothly. I removed the USB drive to boot back into my installation. I hear a short CPU beep when gdm displays the login prompt(this repeats every time). On logging in, I was able to use the desktop for around 2 minutes after which the system hangs up(I hear a beep every time this happens). I figured this was probably a problem with the video driver. Next time, I ctrl + alt + f2'd into tty2 and stopped gdm using "sudo /etc/init.d/gmd3 stop". I then proceeded to uninstall nouveau drivers using
- Code: Select all
sudo apt-get remove --purge xserver-xorg-video-nouveau libdrm-nouveau1
I then installed the nvidia drivers as per the instruction on the forum. I reckon this went successfully as I get "direct rendering :yes" when I do "glxinfo | grep rendering".
But the problem still persists and my desktop is unusable as it hangs within five minutes of booting up.
It is to be noted that the 'hang up' itself happens differently each time. Sometimes the mouse freezes and i cant do anything. Sometimes, I get to a black screen with a blinking cursor. Other instances include the system restarting by itself and in some occasions, it freezes with a long continuous beep when the desktop is loading. Sometimes i was able to use the desktop for long time and even play youtube videos in full screen. Sound and Internet work out of the box.
I cleaned my motherboard, checked the seating of RAM, GPU, connectors etc.,. I did a memtest only a few months back and it came out without any errors. I am dual booting lmde with my windows xp installation which is running without a glitch(I play games, videos etc for long periods of time). It is because of this reason I think it is not a hardware problem.
Please help me troubleshoot this problem. I have been at this for three days and I really feel if I can get this up and running i could keep this stable setup for a long period of time. Thanks!!
