Linux Mint 12 KDE RC first impressions

Postby ferri on Mon Jan 09, 2012 1:21 pm

According me Kubuntu 11.10 is only about 75% of LM 12 KDE after default installation.

I like:
- wallpaper (blue is good :D )
- no need to download Firefox like in Kubuntu
- Mint Software Manager
- Synaptic package manager after installation.

I missing Pager applet (switching desktop) after installation.

These my first impressions from live regime. This time I am installing into vmware virtual machine for further testing.

I do not know if it is problem of vmware player and virtual machine, but when I started update manager, it only checked servers for updates and then froze. I have only grey empty window.

The final usually comes out 2-3 weeks after the release candidate, which is out now.

The pager is just not there by default. You can add it yourself by adding the pager widget.

I've been using the 64 bit version on my laptop with no issues so far. All updates went off without a hitch as did the installation of additional software I use..

After install and update I had to download and install the ATI graphics driver. This made a world of difference.

It is so much faster than when I had Kubuntu installed..

Mint just does it right...........

First impression: Works for me. :D Everything about it works for me, including ATI proprietary graphics which I could never get to work right on Mint before. My laptop now runs about 8 degrees cooler. Good job Team Mint!

First impression

the live dvd ran like a pig slow unresponsive. Very odd cause Ubuntu 11.10 live dvd runs fast

The installer crashed the first time every time I did an install.

once installed ran great. did the updates went flawlessly did a restart an worked good.

Nvidia driver install crashed. by crashed said error in downloading an installing driver rebooted no screen.

no big deal re install. This time installed the nvidia driver with apt get installed fine rebooted same problem no screen.

Third attempt installed it on test machine ran updates rebooted all worked fine. Seems as long as you don't try too install the restricted drivers it works well. plaid around with it an am using it now works fine just odd that the nvidia drovers giving it problems.

one last this the install seems slower then installing mint 12 gnome.

also the test box is a p4 duel core 3 gig with 2 gig of ram an nvidia 6 series video card.

I saw that installation took more time than usually, too.

I just installed KDE Lisa RC and everything seems to work well, as on Kubuntu 11.10 and sometimes even better! But I must point out the presence of the same problem already on Julia KDE, after an update login without password is disabled and the fonts seem to return to the default setting .... this does not happen on Kubuntu.
A suggestion to maintain uniformity with the Main edition, Faenza icons are also available for KDE and, in my opinion, they are much more beautiful than the default ones:

Thanks to Clem and all the Team for their efforts to release another amazing version of the best Linux distro.

It's really sweet if you upgrade to KDE 4.7.97 (4.8 RC2).

I tried to install the kubuntu restricted extras (I was trying to get the record stream script to work in amarok). But it froze in the eula for microsoft true type fonts. There is no place to accept or deny the user agreement and you can't get rid of it. It happens in synaptic as well as the terminal. All you can do is kill the program (synaptic or terminal)
and it renders apt-get inoperable. It's a horrible mess!.
If idiots could fly this would be a freakin' airport! :)

you can see how to accept the eula in : http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=1868888
or you can try install "ttf-mscorefonts-installer" in synaptic first

Hmm, maybe your system tried to actually read the eula (something people almost never do) - I knew it's dangerous for the brain.

See in about:config if your slovak language is actually taken care of. (general.useragent.locale) - if not, double-click and change it! :)

(Great to see KDE is making progress in Mint again!)
Linux is not the only answer! :: eD2k/Kad mirrors for Linux Mint and LMDE.
Users who misspell "Windows" as "Windoze" intentionally will be considered stupid.

Hit the tab button then enter. That will highlight the OK and let you accept..
