I changed /etc/apt/sources.list exactly as I did before, so the output of inxi -r is identical. Here it is again for good measure.

Code: Select all

Once again, the output is the same, but I'll post it again. The mirror is whatever mirror I happened to be using; all of them seem to have the same effect.

have you tried the main server (i know that the speed might be lower), but eventually you won't get these errors (at least i hope)

Yes, I have tried the main server. As in the first post of my thread, that was the first mirror I tried both times.

well, i'm out of ideas, the only thing that i can assure you is that the repos are working, they just did minutes ago for me;
assuming that it's a laptop can you try a different internet provider (a friend, work, a internet-caffe)?

I'm confused as to how my internet connection could be working (I'm posting this from that laptop) and that I can ping the repositories, but still not be able to resolve them through updating... I would think that if I could ping them, I'd be able to access them as well for updates. Here are the results of pinging two of them:

Code: Select all

I don't know when I'll be able to try another connection, since I'm supposed to leave in two days, but I'll try to keep it posted. Are there any other files I could post that might shed light on the problem?

zerozero,
Jumping into the debate. I get that output too. Her is how my sources.list looks:

hi gorade,
i believe yours is an easier problem :lol:
somehow you have a few wrong repos in your sources.list, once you tide this up let's hope those errors go away:

this doesn't exist:
###### Debian Update Repos
deb http://debian.linuxmint.com/latest/multimedia/ squeeze/updates main contrib non-free
deb-src http://debian.linuxmint.com/latest/multimedia/ squeeze/updates main contrib non-free

## Run this command: apt-get update && apt-get install debian.linuxmint.com/latest/multimedia-keyring && apt-get update

and this one i don't know why you have it there:
#### Debian Backports - http://backports.debian.org/
deb http://backports.debian.org/debian-backports squeeze-backports main

Yes. You were right. Seems to have gathered some alluvial deposits.

Now it only complains there is no key for launchpadnet and skype, which is the way of it.
Thank you zerozero! Now it seems all right.

Could the error message I get when I click the "update pack info" button in the update manager have something to do with this (the error message posted a few posts up, involving a whole slew of Python errors)? I don't understand how I can visit the repository through my web browser, but the url doesn't resolve when I try to update.

EDIT: After doing a bit more research online, I found these two posts as well: http://forum.linuxmint.com/viewtopic.ph ... 2&p=335165 and http://forums.linuxmint.com/viewtopic.php?f=141&t=71308, neither of which found a solution. That is certainly not encouraging to me if no solution has been found over a year later.

I don't have the opportunity to check right now, but if this is a problem with the internet connection in my flat, how would that make sense? How can I browse the repository in my browser, but not access it using sudo apt-get update or the mintupdate gui?

I asked this once before, but are there any other files I could post that would help someone make sense of this problem? If not, should I just switch to a different Linux distribution because this one clearly isn't suited to my needs (i.e. working...)? I've reinstalled several times and verified the ISO with its md5 checksum every time, yet still no success.

after my last post i found 2 more topics with similar issues
http://forums.linuxmint.com/viewtopic.p ... ns#p499377
http://forums.linuxmint.com/viewtopic.p ... ns#p499084
and my best bet is a dns issue; try switch to an openDNS as suggested there.

pythonscript, I had exactly the problem you did. Here's the solution:

https://store.opendns.com/familyshield/ ... tem/ubuntu

It's very simple, and has zilch to do with the repos.

Also, I used 8.8.8.8, 8.8.4.4
