this fix has made all of my sound issues disappear. Even running World of Warcraft in wine has less sound issues now for me.
My sound seems to be working for everything else now, but I still can't get it co operate with wine/world of warcraft. :( .....

Any one have any "ideas" .... or suggestions?

Oh man, I wish I have seen this guide before I tried to install ALSA and mess up my sound! I already asked a question about that, I couldn't get an answer in time and I had to use the sound, so I reinstalled the OS.

I am going to try this later on Mint 11, because I just reinstalled everything and the sound is needed in the coming days :) I will report back after I try this.

Can anyone please tell me if this still works on Mint 12?

Is 32bit going to differ from 64bit?

Thanks!

Well i have tried it on Mint 12 and it works till step D
So removing is no problem till the reset, but after the reset i have to instal esound after this ill get this:

Code: Select all

roadfighter@Laptop ~ $ sudo apt-get install libalsaplayer0 esound
[sudo] password for roadfighter:
Reading package lists... Done
Building dependency tree
Reading state information... Done
Note, selecting 'pulseaudio-esound-compat' instead of 'esound'
libalsaplayer0 is reeds de nieuwste versie.
De volgende extra pakketten zullen geïnstalleerd worden:
  gstreamer0.10-pulseaudio pulseaudio pulseaudio-module-x11 pulseaudio-utils
Voorgestelde pakketten:
  pavumeter paman paprefs pulseaudio-module-raop
De volgende NIEUWE pakketten zullen geïnstalleerd worden:
  gstreamer0.10-pulseaudio pulseaudio pulseaudio-esound-compat
  pulseaudio-module-x11 pulseaudio-utils
Wilt u doorgaan [J/n]? n
Afbreken.
roadfighter@Laptop ~ $
As you see the problem starts here selecting 'pulseaudio-esound-compat' instead of 'esound'
After this all the pakkets that are uninstalled are installed again............
So now my question:
What to do next ?

Hi!

The guide is originally written for Mint 10 (and I don't know if it works for other versions), but if the above is the only problem you are facing, you can safely ignore 'esound' package.
When I wrote the guide I read somewhere that 'esound' was needed to play games like "Chaos Strikes Back" and alike, and that was why I included it.

This is the one I used. It is specifically for Oneiric:

Thank you so much ..
After several days of hassle with sound input in my newly installed linuxmint 12, your guide helped solve the problem, and sound input via the mic is now ok..

I'm really new to this. Have Linux Mint 10 Julia 32 bit. No mic on Skype so attempted removing PulseAudio replacement with ALSA. All went well until step G. got message "could not apply changes, fix broken packages first". Any suggestions? Thanks

mads, I had to register so I could thank you. My Ubuntu 10.04 LTS, has been soundless for a month!, and, after too much research and experiment, or maybe precisely enough, I am now listening to music 10 minutes after starting to read your howto! :!: :D :D thanks

UPDATE ON THIS SUBJECT:

Completely remove PulseAudio & replace it with ALSA (Mint 13 Cinnamon, and XFCE):

A. Before proceeding, please use Update Manager to install the latest updates (click mintUpdate tray icon to open Update Manager > Refresh > Install Updates)
B. Menu > Preferences > Startup Applications > uncheck "PulseAudio Sound System" and "PulseAudio Sound System KDE Routing Policy"
C. Remove pulseaudio, related packages and configuration files:

Code: Select all

killall pulseaudio
sudo killall pulseaudio
sudo apt-get purge pulseaudio pulseaudio-utils gstreamer0.10-pulseaudio libpulse-browse0 paman pavumeter pavucontrol
sudo mv /etc/asound.conf /etc/asound.conf-bak
rm ~/.pulse-cookie
rm -r ~/.pulse
D. Restart your computer

F. For Cinnamon only: To enable Volume Control, I found out 3 mixer choices: gnome-alsamixer, qasmixer and xfce4-mixer. Qasmixer seems a little bit complicated. Gnome-alsamixer and xfce4-mixer are ok. I choosed xfce4-mixer.

Code: Select all

sudo apt-get install xfce4-mixer
G. Configure gstreamer to use ALSA for default output and input

Code: Select all

gstreamer-properties
H. I also had to configure Skype to use my webcam mic, which was a pain in the ass, since without pulseaudio, you now have like 10+ unclear options to choose from. Try them all!!! But in the end, it works now.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

I've done this procedure on 2 computers:

Mint 13 XFCE 32 bit: It's easier on XFCE, because xcfe4-mixer is already installed, and you still can have it in the system tray.

Mint 13 Cinnamon 64 bit: it works, but I don't have the system tray icon now. Does anybody know how to get it back?

Reasons I wanted to uninstall pulseaudio: my desktop computer has ac powered speakers. My other computer is more like a htpc. When I listened to music with pulseaudio, the sound was always distorted, kinda overamplified, which was quite annoying. Plus my webcam mic didnt work. Back in the days that I used Windows, the sound was good. But now that I'm running Linux only, i had to find a way. It was a little harder than what the first post suggested, but in the end it works!

If anybody has some more tips on the subject, tell us!

Removing PA is actually not necessary anymore in Mint 14, at least not for the use with skype! Distorted sound becomes good after a minute or so.

Hello, everybody.
Just wont to say that this instructions are working on Mint 15 "Olivia" Cinnamon X86_64. For Volume Control I'm using volumeicon-alsa and alsamixergui on Fluxbox (but I needed to restore /etc/asound.conf to it place to avoid hdmi sound and sb card conflict).
Regards. :)

What about doing this for Linux Mint 17?

Pulseaudio is giving me a LOT of problems - and removing it, VLC and MPLAYER stop working because they seem to be linked to this damn tool :(

Can someone help me?

Hi Asberto,

I've opened this topic here:

Mint17 Cinnamon - How can I replace Pulse Audio with ALSA?
http://forums.linuxmint.com/viewtopic.php?f=48&t=171128

I don't know if that can be done. At least for me, with Cinnamon, it wants to uninstall the desktop environment too...
Bye for now,
Bruno
