No sound in chromium browser, works in Firefox

Postby Ozman on Sun Jan 15, 2012 9:31 pm

I have LM 11 with Chromium browser 14.0.835.202 and Firefox 9.01. My problem is that I can play videos in both browsers, but I can only get sound in Firefox. I have checked the levels in Alsamixer and I have installed flash-aid to ensure I have no conflicting versions of flash. Audio is connected by both line in and optical and both produce sound in Firefox, but neither provide sound in Chrome. I have had the problem since I installed Chrome, which is many months. Firefox has always played audio. Can anyone suggest why I have no sound in Chromium?

Hi Ozman.
See if No Sound in Chromium / Chrome OS helps.

No, this post just suggests bringing up alsamixer and checking the levels. I have already done that, but thanks anyway.

Are you using Pulseaudio? It is what manages sound in LM 11 by default. If so, then you need to check that Chromium is being routed to the correct Pulseaudio output device...

If the problem was with ALSA, you wouldn't have ANY sound, since ALSA manages your devices, not your apps.

Thanks, can you tell me how I would do that?

Yes. You should get to your "Sound preferences" window - there are two ways that I know of, either by right-clicking on the GNOME2-panel sound applet or by searching for "Sound" in the MintMenu. If I remember correctly, in the first tab, you should be able to see all the applications that are currently playing sound through PulseAudio and which device they are using - and also, you should be able to change that device. If Chromium appears there, try changing the device it is using. If it doesn't appear there, well, that's just weird because it should, so something is broken
