Are you running Linux Mint 12? Do you have /etc/lightdm/ folder at all? If so, what's in the /etc/lightdm/lightdm.conf ?

Yeah. That's why my original post said it wasn't Mate dependant.

Not sure which login manager is in use, but likely either LXDM or GDM3 . Do you have an option under System Tools for "login screen" ?

No....my laptop runs LMDE-Sid+MATE, so everything is a little different. Normally in LMDE there would be, but seeing how I've got Sid+MATE in here, it's changed a few things around. I am running GDM3 for the window manager, but it has no effect on the background being changed....I've already gone into the greeter for GDM3 and did that, I still have stripes for the background

I see consistent 60% CPU utilization while compiz is running. Killing compiz drops the cpu down to about 3% .

Yes, using mate-session-manager 1.1.2-1 . I logged out and back in, but didn't completely reboot. Trying that now...

I can verify this.

I've upgraded to "mate-session-manager" version 1.1.2-1 and I'm experiencing the same type of thing. Enabling "compiz" in MATE runs all four of my CPU cores between 30% and 40% each at an idle without anything else running. Switching back to "metacity" does not drop CPU usage without logging out and back in again. Once I log out and back in all four cores are idling between 0% and 3% which is normal for me.

This is on my desktop PC. System specs are:

Linux Mint 12 64-bit running on - Intel Core2-Quad Q8400/4MB L2 Cache, 8GB DDR2, Nvidia GT-430 w/1GB DDR3 (280.13 Nvidia driver)

its some sort of marco bug (it keeps adding processes whithout closing them)
for me helped ln -s /usr/lib/libgnutls.so /usr/lib/libgnutls.so.26 (found from archlinux wiki)
and then killall marco into startup
no more cpu hogging then.

I've just updated "mate-session-manager" from 1.1.2-1 to 1.1.2-2 this morning and I'm still seeing the problem of high resource usage with Compiz enabled. No change. That being said, I don't know if this update was meant to fix this particular problem.

I tried this and when adding "killall marco" into 'Startup Applications', MATE logs in without a window manager (no Minimize, Maximize or Close buttons, no window decorations). Windows will open but I can't close them or switch between them if one window is maximized since they don't show on the mate-panel. Also, when Compiz is enabled, resource usage is still high. Did I miss something here?

with compiz enabled you dont have decorations? strange
you could try this hack then ln -s /usr/lib/libmarco-private.so.0 /usr/lib/libmetacity-private.so.0
so compiz can take gtk decorations.
check here as well: https://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/MATE

its all hacky tho. but works for me so far without any problems and cpu hogging

I'm also having the MintMenu applet problem, apt update && apt upgrade hasn't fixed it. I installed a bunch of applications before restarting my computer to discover than MintMenu had died, so I'd rather not try to step back through them all one by one to see which one killed the menu...
