not hating but......

Postby podagee on Tue Jan 17, 2012 4:36 am

this post will probably stir up issues within the community, but, that is expected.before i proceed i would like to say that i am in no way stating that the mint team is doing a horrible job.i actually love their work.
ive recently converted to opensuse 12.1 32bit kde for one simple reason, stability.i made the move a few days ago, because i have been searching for a distro that suites me.ive been a faithful user of mint since 10.i felt it was time to move on.i have been talking to a family member who has introduced me to the linux world and he has been having nothing but issues with mint.i have been doing my own research on the web about the distros and the work being put into them and i have not liked what ive found.
it points out a main factor that stands out to me...the developers aim for user friendliness, which is nice, there main focus tends to be at that.thats where the problem begins.it doesnt mention anything about stability.i have reinstalled mint and ubuntu over 200 times, give or take, mostly due to operator errors, but, not always the case.i have had mint and ubuntu crash on me many times.got over it and switched my game plan.
i think mints primary focus should be on stability then everything else.and again,i am not disrespecting or hating on mint for their work, which is awesome.i think stability plays a more important role though.its easy to say that a distro is stable, but, its not certain.
this is more like a suggestion.....go for stability first and the rest later.
please do not take any offense to this post.

podagee, I am very happy that you are enjoying the stability of your openSUSE 12.1 KDE. However, I thought that you had already pointed this out here:
podagee wrote:opensuse 12.1 kde is what i am currently on and i am loving it.the pros are 1)stability 2)stability and 3)stability.at first it was rough as with learning any new distro since i only know debian/ubuntu based distros.after a day or 2 you get the hang of it.give it a spin

and here:

Suse is a fine distro and I am sure you can be very happy with it. Stop in and say "hi" when you get a chance. Good Luck

Not all hardware combinations allow equal stability in a given OS. Your instability issues with Mint are likely due to your specific hardware arrangement.

Think about how many of us complained about Gnome 3 when Mint 12 was first released. Obviously we are a vocal group and if stability was truly an issue, the forums would be absolutely churning with posts about it.

I'm sure hardware makes a huge difference between distros. Mint 12 KDE runs flawlessly for me. Software Manager, Mint Update, Synaptic all work perfectly. Tried openSUSE 12.1 last night. Dolphin crashed continually, system froze a number of times, and updates would not work. So I'll definitely be staying with Mint 12 KDE.

hardware on my dell is never an issue for any linux distro.
as far as dolphin crashing, updates not working, and freezes,my dolphin hasnt crashed yet,my updates work perfectly fine, and for freezes...i experienced that about 2-3 times before updating.everything works perfect on my end.
