Associate files with custom applications

Associate files with custom applications

Postby trancephorm on Sun Dec 18, 2011 6:43 am

I'm using Gnome Classic desktop (I hope I'm right when I say it's Mate? :), and there is some serious flaw I noticed... In short, in Nautilus how can I associate some file type to be opened with custom application found in filesystem, not just with registered ones offered by Nautilus?

Thanks...

Sorry, no. MATE is a completely different desktop than GNOME Classic. MATE uses caja rather than Nautilus so I can't answer your question. :(

Easiest way is to right mouse, choose properties then Open With, Add. If you want to do several then ubuntu tweak may be easier.

Caja is just a fork of Nautilus though. It's supposed to be identical.

There are two quick ways to choose a default application to use for a file type. One is as Remoulder described, which allows you to choose additional applications to show in the right-click menu. The other way is to select 'Open With Other Application' from the right-click menu, then tick the checkbox at the bottom of the window to keep the selected application as the default.

Nah, caja crashes a lot more often that Nautilus. ;)

Sorry guys, but you still haven't described where can I put path or browse to point to custom application I want to use for opening some type of file, really there are no such options and boxes on screens you told me to look into. And I already tried it before. Please, if I'm missing something try to be as much as comprehensive as you can be.

now with MATE in about 2 months i have had 2 caja restarts only.

Right click on the item you want to change. You should see this menu:

Choose Open With -> Other Application... and you should see this:

Make sure the "Remember this application for..." checkbox is selected and choose the application. From then on, you should be able to double-click a file the the application will open it.

I'm getting completely different screens, there's no use a custom command anywhere.. seems like we're thinking about different desktops... can post some screenshots if anyone interested, but I can't do it right now...

What shawnhcorey keeps showing you is mate. But I think you are using "Gnome Classic" so you will not see what he sees.

Logout and log into mate and see if you can see the the same screenshot.

So my question is naturally, anyone know how to do it in Gnome Classic? Because I doubt the change in Mate would affect Classic...

So why don't you ask your question in a GNOME forum and not a MATE one?

[1] Why don't you try it a find out.
[2] Doing it in mate changes certain files that don't just disappear when you go back into Classic.
[3] I can install XFCE's file manager - Thunar - and make a file association that works in Nautilus and last time I checked XFCE is not Gnome.

OK, so I have Gnome, Gnome Classic and Gnome Classic (No Effect) to choose from when I login... In either of these 3 desktops, I get the following dialogue for association of files:
shot.png
shot.png (34.76 KiB) Viewed 1223 times

So I concluded this cannot be dont from GUI. Anyone knows how can I do it from console, if possible at all?

I think this is very serious flaw in Mint 12.

Click on the button marked, "Show other applications", then choose the one you want.

That's not what I want to choose from predefined apps, I want to enter path to executable.

It seems to me you have 3 options:

[1] There is something wrong with your install if you do not have the Mate option at login or ...

From the Mint12 announcement page: http://www.linuxmint.com/rel_lisa_whatsnew.php
MATE is present on the DVD edition of Linux Mint 12. Users of the CD edition can install it via the mint-meta-mate package.

You can install mate if you used the CD edition - I'm not sure how big a download that is however. Then you can log into a Mate session, create your file association, logout, and log back into a Gnome3 session.

[2] You can do the whole thing manually. Here's the first one I found : http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=1850568

[3] Install XFCE's Thunar:
Code: Select all
sudo apt-get install thunar

With all of it's dependencies it will be a 6.3MB download

Then open it up and do exactly what generations of users have done in the past:
Right click a file > Open with other application > Use a custom command

Note: You will not have to use thunar to launch the application after the association has been made - Nautilus will work.

I think this is very serious flaw in Mint 12.

I personally agree that it is a flaw but it's not Mint's. It's Gnome3.

Thank you very much for your comprehensive answer! Will try that manual way... Now I wouldn't say it's not Mint's flaw because if you ask me Gnome 3 is actually very unfriendly and almost unusable because of such a basic disfunctionality, and thus shouldn't then even be included in Mint... Thanks again..
