Cannot enable Broadcom BCM4318 wireless card

Postby Duderino on Wed Jan 18, 2012 10:54 pm

Running Katya 32 bit

Output of inxi
Code: Select all
CPU[-Single core Mobile Intel Pentium III - M (-UP-) clocked at 798.000 Mhz-] Kernel[-2.6.38-8-generic i686-] Up[-1:34-] Mem[-281.5/1000.1MB-] HDD[-40.0GB(8.7% used)-] Procs[-133-] Client[-Shell-] inxi[-1.4.23-]

Installed B43 cutter per instructions here https://help.ubuntu.com/community/WifiDocs/Driver/bcm43xx

When I go to Administration > Additional Drivers, I get the message at top of the window "No proprietary drivers are in use on this system"

I can see the card listed on Network connections but cannot select it, says "device not ready (firmware missing)." What must I do to enable/install the firmware and/or drivers for this card?

This is pretty old, but I had a problem with a Belkin FSD7000 Ver. 4000, which uses the same Broadcom chip.

After a LONG time and a lot of searching, terminal (CLI) work, nothing...

BUT!

Then, I decided to just plug it into an ethernet cable, go to Synaptic, type in "wireless" in the search...

It yielded a LOT of results. I narrowed it down to Broadcom-sta-source, and marked it for download and installation.

The indicator lights on the FSD7000 lit up and I was up and running after left-clicking on the network connections icon at top right (LM12 Lisa) and selecting the SSID I wanted + password/WEP Key.

Whew! It worked and I'm connected now via the card.

Good luck!
