How do I get webcam to work in Kopete with Yahoo Messenger?

Postby aegimius on Sat Jan 21, 2012 8:55 pm

I am using Linux Mint 11 Katya, 64 bit. This has been asked before, but things may have changed since the last time this has been asked, and the answers to this question have not been helpful for my situation. I am simply trying to have a webcam chat using Kopete(Version 1.0.80) with friends who use Yahoo Messenger. I can chat with no problem, webcam works fine with Cheese and in the Kopete Configure screen, but I can't use my webcam or see my friend's cam. Every time I try to use the cam, I get this message: "Unable to find the Jasper image conversion program.
Jasper is required to render Yahoo webcam images.
Please see http://wiki.kde.org/tiki-index.php?page ... %20Support
for further information."

I tried getting this Japser Program many times, by doing this in terminal: "sudo apt-get install jasper libjasper-java libjasper-runtime libjasper-dev libjasper1"..
It looks like it may not be installing properly, since in terminal, I get this info after trying to install Jasper: "Reading package lists... Done
Building dependency tree
Reading state information... Done
jasper is already the newest version.
libjasper-java is already the newest version.
libjasper-dev is already the newest version.
libjasper1 is already the newest version.
libjasper-runtime is already the newest version.

Is Polipo interfering with Jasper? Or is something else interfering? My webcam works fine with Cheese, and I can even see my ugly face through the cam just fine in the configure section of Kopete. What can I do, and would upgrading to the latest version of Linux Mint Lisa help resolve it? Thanks.

Linux Mint is funded by ads and donations.

I'd start with upgrading your system; there are 279 packages ready for upgrade, why aren't you installing upgrades?

Secondly, it is complaining that one package is not fully installed. That would be polipo, I guess. Are you using polipo, and if so does it work? Else I'd go into Synaptic Package Manager and remove polipo.

The one package that is not fully installed (polipo) is blocking you installing the other packages you want.

Okay, I removed Polipo, installed all the updates and even tried installing Jasper again, and the webcam still doesn't work in Kopete. Thanks anyway.

What if I were to run Yahoo Messenger in Windows Virtual Machine? would this work? I still haven't gotten virtual machine to work, still used to this.
