Problem 2) Software Manager crashes

Try this:
Code: Select all
sudo mv /var/lib/apt/lists /var/lib/apt/lists.old
sudo mkdir -p /var/lib/apt/lists/partial
sudo apt-get update

Mint 12 KDE and Jockey - in the german subforum is a thread with exactly the same problem:

viewtopic.php?f=64&t=92369&p=530578#p530578

Could it be a bug?

Yes, it means that the command was executed with no errors.
You could try to reinstall Software Manager:
Code: Select all
sudo apt-get install --reinstall mintinstall
