Hi viking777,
Congrats on becoming moderator Saw it on the other thread. 3070 posts! My contribution to mint is nowhere near, probably other than introducing those I know to Mint. Way to go!
As for Gnome 3.2, so yeah, maybe I should just stop thinking abt it. Like someone I know says, Expectation creates frustration and pain. Maybe, its what we have to pay for the stability we get. Thanks anyway.

Thanks sharmila - those posts stretch back over quite a few years!sharmila wrote:Hi viking777,

Btw I don't know if you read that thread before or after GeneC added his workround to it. If you want shell 3.2 right now then have a look at it again, his method is simple to use and it works, it has made me a very happy Lmde user again!
Re: Gnome 3.2 is in debian testing! LMDE upgrade?
Quite a lot of people care about gnome-shell 3.2 actually, myself included, it is a huge improvement over 3.0 (because of the number of extension available for it) but I know it is not everybody's cup of tea and I understand your frustration.rbxgmxn wrote:But who really gives a crap about Gnome3.2??
We want Update Pack 4 for the software UPDATES -- Chromium, Gimp, Geany, VLC, LibreOffice, Pidgin, qTorrent, XFCE, ...
You know, like with Firefox which is now at 9.0.1 (from a few weeks ago when it was v5), now why is that in your opinion?
(I know, testing. I don't want testing: I've messed the OS core enough times already; I just want my updated "user" space apps!)
As to the second part of your question, this has been debated by others at length and answered by Clem himself. There will be no Update Pack 4 until Gnome-shell3.2 enters testing (and even after that it will take a while to prepare it). He is absolutely adamant about this, he has even closed threads that continued to discuss it after he had made his explanation. Given that strength of feeling, it is not likely that you are going to change his mind for him!
His suggestion to those who want to update certain programs is to do it by either downloading the updates required from packages.debian.org or better still (because the previous method may involve you in dependency problems) just add the sources.list for debian testing to your existing list, update using the package manager - synaptic, pick the packages you want to upgrade and then remove the line again (or comment it out in case you want to use the same method in the future).
These are the lines you would need to add to /etc/apt/sources.list:
Code: Select all
deb http://ftp.debian.org/debian testing main contrib non-free
deb http://security.debian.org/ testing/updates main contrib non-free
deb http://www.debian-multimedia.org testing main non-free
Code: Select all
#deb http://ftp.debian.org/debian testing main contrib non-free
#deb http://security.debian.org/ testing/updates main contrib non-free
#deb http://www.debian-multimedia.org testing main non-free
Your other option is continued patience.
Re: Gnome 3.2 is in debian testing! LMDE upgrade?
We can only hope so.I suppose, once the Gnome3.2 transition is over, the updates will be more regular
Re: Gnome 3.2 is in debian testing! LMDE upgrade?
Gnome-shell 3.2 is not in testing yet. (As of yesterday). Most of gnome 3.2 is.

Just use flashplayer-mozilla from the debian-multimedia repository.rbxgmxn wrote:I had to upgrade flash11 manually as even youtube videos were crashing it.)

Well, don't hold your breath! The Debian developers have recently announced that the "Testing Freeze", in preparation for Wheezy Stable will be taking place in June 2012.viking777 wrote:We can only hope so.I suppose, once the Gnome3.2 transition is over, the updates will be more regular
Assuming LMDE UP4 comes maybe in February, more likely March or April, you are not going to get much 'rolling' until June. Then nothing until (based on past record) about early 2013?!
Seriously folks, Debian Testing is not a 'real' rolling release and any Distro using it as a 'rolling release' base ( which Mint is still doing) is having a lend of you.
They should either release LMDE as based on Stable+Backports+Mint Enhancements and/or as real rolling release based on Sid+Mint Enhancements. Testing as a base is more trouble than it is worth.
Just an opinion,

Sid will also stop rolling with the Freeze in June!

Re: Gnome 3.2 is in debian testing! LMDE upgrade?
testing was never (and is not) a rolling release;
sid is a rolling release (and won't be frozen in june 2012- the development might slow down because the debian devs are focusing in fixing bugs for the debian7 release- nothing else)

Re: Gnome 3.2 is in debian testing! LMDE upgrade?
Well someone should tell whoever puts the message to the world about it on the blog then!! :zerozero wrote:testing was never (and is not) a rolling release;
This has been my only gripe with Mint & I will keep telling people until it is fixed! Clem can do what he wants with LMDE, it is his distro. I am not and will not say otherwise, BUT, he has a moral obligation at least to be consistent between how he portrays the distro to the public and how he runs it. I get annoyed because it is not him (or you prime supporters) that has to deal with (in this case) over 150 people who came to use it, got me to install & support it and then were totally disillusioned at best to find he turned it into something that did not give them primarily what they were after - a rolling Debian-based system with Mint enhancements.LMDE 201109 Gnome
The team is proud to announce the release of LMDE 201109 with updated ISOs for Gnome and Xfce.
Highlights
LMDE in brief
Linux Mint Debian Edition (LMDE) is a rolling distribution based on Debian Testing.
I know all the repo options discussed in numerous threads, none of which leave you with an essentially Mint system anymore by the way, and I can ( and have) moved them all off to their preferred options but my point is, Clem is not the only one with a heavy workload around here (unpaid I might add) and I get annoyed about this. Clem has every right to run Mint the way he likes but others surely have every right to tell him when they think he has made a mistake.
With some judicious use of AptOnCd, some preferences pinning and a few config scripts, LMDE ( Xfce in particular) is still quite a useful installer for Debian Sid systems & that's its primary use here, but LMDE as advertised does not exist.

Re: Gnome 3.2 is in debian testing! LMDE upgrade?
I'm thinking I will just go into the freeze and come out next year with a Stable version, switching my repos. Might as well just upgrade to Stable every couple of years and forget about Testing.

GDM3.2 in testing! Now what?
Hi,
Now that GDM3.2 is in testing (see http://oskuro.net/blog/freesoftware/gno ... 1-31-01-23) the next update pack for LMDE (even myself using XFCE) should be out of the door, isn't it?
Any news? Comments?
Thank you!
