Banshee and Software Manager close when opened

Post by Clepto »

Hi everyone, I'm very pleased with Linux Mint 12, and it has been working perfectly up until now. Whenever I open Banshee or Software Manager, they just close right after opening. I'm on Linux Mint 12, Gnome.

Please try opening both from the command prompt, and share any errors you get shown there. Open Terminal, and run:

Code: Select all

banshee
And

Code: Select all

mintinstall

For Banshee, disconnect Shane's iPod Touch please. MTP is crashing on it.

For Software Manager, try this:
sudo mv /var/lib/apt/lists /var/lib/apt/lists.old
sudo mkdir -p /var/lib/apt/lists/partial
sudo apt-get update

Mint12 KDE 64 bit Software Manager

The software manager will launch and this disappears. No matter how I launch it, it starts and then disappears.
Is anyone experiencing this and if so know of a fix?

Thanks.

same problem here, software manager shuts itself down, had almost identical errors as harryknutz.
tried the kernel update mentioned in another topic but still no luck... it added some more errors to the report :/

I had the same problem running Banshee (on Linux Mint 12 KDE).
This is how I got it working (if you already installed Banshee, skip to 4):

1. Add repository and update
sudo add-apt-repository ppa:banshee-team/ppa
sudo apt-get update

2. Get the version to install
sudo apt-cache policy banshee

3. Force version install of banshee
sudo apt-get install banshee=2.4.0-1ubuntu1~hyper1+oneiric

4. Purge oxygen theme for gtk (lets Banshee crash)
sudo apt-get purge gtk2-engines-oxygen

All gtk programs look terrible but at least I got Banshee running...

[Edit] If someone can help me with changing the gtk theme (changing gtk+ appearances doesn't seem to change a thing), I'd appreciate that.

[Edit2] This night I found out that simply installing another gtk2-engine (in my case gtk2-engines-aurora), changing the widget style to the new theme in the gtk+ appearances window, and renaming /home/[user]/.gtkrc-2.0-kde4 to /home/[user]/.gtkrc-2.0 did the trick. You can also use gtk-theme-switch.

[Edit3] I just found a solution to run only Banshee with another gtk theme (after I deleted .gtkrc-2.0 and checked that all other apps were using the default oxygen theme): bash -c "GTK2_RC_FILES="/usr/share/themes/Aurora/gtk-2.0/gtkrc" banshee"

Now I am a happy camper
