What is the point in renaming Nautilus to CAJA?
And in the process lose all Nautilus extensions?

I am getting a conflict between mate-applets and gnome-applets. When the latest version of mate-applets is to be installed it tries to overwrite invest and weather data files from the gnome-applets package. Any ideas?

The mate-applets version is 1.1.1 and it tries to install a new package mate-applets-common

The point is to allow side-by-side installations of both Gnome3 with Nautilus and MATE with Caja. Otherwise, the only file manager you'd have installed on your system would be one or the other.

The bug has been fixed and will be available in mate-applets-1.1.2-1 whenever that makes its way into the tridex repo.

It's already built, but stefano-k needs to upload it to the tridex repo still and he's asleep. 8-12 hours maybe? Definitely within 24.

After you add the repo to your sources bring up the terminal and run the following command\;

Code: Select all
sudo apt-get install mate-archive-keyring

The above is found on the following post on the new MATE blog (MATE's info is not very organized as yet it seems but it's still very young yet):

http://blog.karapetsas.com/index.php?id=2

One word of caution though. The MATE packages that come with Linux Mint 12 come through Mint's repositories, not directly from MATE's Tridex repos and I have found that attempting to install any package from MATE's Tridex repos tries to remove key components of LM 12's MATE DE. It also appears that the MATE DE included with Linux Mint 12 is not directly upgradable from the Tridex repos. For example, with the Tridex repos enabled Caja "installed" version is 1.0.x and MATE's Tridex repo version is 1.1.x but LM 12's Caja (in Synaptic) shows no upgrade available. Same with other LM 12 MATE packages. It looks like LM 12's version of MATE and MATE's latest version are two different animals entirely and are not compatible. Either you have Linux Mint 12's version installed or MATE's latest version.

Any thoughts on this?

A little late to the party, but I have the same keyring problem with a fresh install of Linux Mint 12 (01/28/12), after following the instructions about adding the tridex repository and installing the 'mate-archive-keyring' . Attached is a screenshot of the terminal error message. The only thing different from the problems with the original poster is that I am able to add stuff in Synaptic -- I just keep getting the message about about 'public key is not available'...

Thanks for any advice anyone can give me.

Re: Mate Desktop Environment - GNOME2 fork

Postby bdantas on Mon Feb 06, 2012 4:57 pm

Linux Mint has been in the spotlight a lot lately, and I find it unfair that Mate hasn't gotten more coverage. I use LM12 with Mate on my computer and find that Mate is now a mature, stable, full-fledged replica of Gnome2. Perberos, Stefano, et al. rose to the occasion when the need for a Gnome2 fork arose and they did the work well and quickly.

I find it difficult to understand how a lot of Linux news blogs go on and on about how XFCE and Cinnamon are sufficiently Gnome2-like to be alternatives for disenfranchised Gnome2 users...often with no mention of Mate! (Or, when Mate is mentioned, it is in the last sentence as an afterthought.) HELLO?! This is like talking to a bereaved cat owner about getting a dog or a hamster, when he can easily get a new CAT--one that is a clone of the one he lost, no less.

I don't want something that's Gnome2-LIKE unless I have no choice--I want Gnome2! It is what I know how to use and it was perfect just as it was (i.e., it had no perceived deficiencies). For you guys out there who feel the same way, know that Mate is a stable and fully-functional EXACT REPLICA of Gnome2.

I'm looking forward to using LM13-LTS with Mate for at least 5 years, and hope that Mate will continue to be developed and included with Linux Mint releases into the distant future. Also, I hope that the Mate developers stay conservative and faithful to their philosophy that not all change is progress. Thank you Perberos, Stefano, and Clem. Many, many thanks :D

Holy words, bdantas! :-) MATE is often ignored or objected. But only with users like you we can continue to keep GNOME2 alive and develop it in the future. Thank you!

MATE is extremely important to us and you've summarized it really well. Trying to offer people something new is one thing, making sure what they care for and love continues to be there and available is an absolute necessity.
