2nd monitor unusable with separate X screens, one rotated

Postby Nick Payne on Wed Nov 02, 2011 8:10 am

Just installed Mint 11 amd64 on a machine running two monitors off a dual head nVidia card, with the right-hand monitor in portrait orientation. After installation I used update manager to install all updates, installed closed source nVidia driver, rebooted, ran
Code: Select all
gksudo nvidia-settings
and configured RH monitor as separate X screen, restarted gdm with
Code: Select all
sudo service gdm restart
both monitors now working but the RH monitor display incorrectly oriented, added
Code: Select all
    Option          "RandRRotation" "on"
    Option          "Rotate" "CCW"
to the section for "Monitor1" in xorg.conf, restarted gdm again. Both monitors now working and in correct orientation, and I can pan the mouse across both monitors and start apps on both. However, there are two problems that make the RH monitor unusable:

1. Applications started on the RH monitor are lacking both their window border and title bar, and so can't be moved or resized.
2. No text can be entered in any input fields in any app started on the RH monitor. Keyboard input works fine for the same apps on the LH monitor

Also, FWIW, the normal Mint menu only appears on the LH monitor, the RH monitor has the standard Gnome menu at the top of screen.

I have Ubuntu 10.04 amd64 installed in another partition on the same machine, and with the same nVidia driver and an identical xorg.conf, everything works fine on both monitors. Regarding problem (1), it looks as though the window border and title bar settings are somehow getting reversed, because if I start Google Chrome on the RH monitor, then go into the Chrome preferences and select the appearance option "Hide system title bar and use compact borders", then the window border and title bar appear on the Chrome window, and I can resize and move it, whereas if I select the option to "Use system title bar and borders", then they disappear and the window can't be moved or resized.

Linux Mint is funded by ads and donations.
