Need help getting this working properly on VMware

Postby Raident on Sun Jan 29, 2012 10:23 pm

I have both Mint 12 and LMDE installed on VMware Workstation. Mint 12 works, save for a few minor issues. LMDE also works, but there's a few major issues:

1) Mouse movement. In Mint 12, the mouse moves at a more or less constant 800 DPI speed. In LMDE, the mouse moves with this really weird acceleration, starting off really slow and then flying across the screen after about 200-500 pixels. Even after turning both Acceleration and Sensitivity down to the minimum settings, I still can't get the mouse to behave like Mint 12.

2) Sound. When I log in to Mint 12, I hear a 2 note chime from my speakers. When I log in to LMDE, I hear a motherboard beep, the kind that happens during POST to tell you whether the BIOS checks happened successfully or not. At first, I thought the audio driver wasn't installed, but since I can hear music in Youtube videos just fine, that doesn't seem to be the case.

3) Unity (as in seamless mode, not the Ubuntu thing). For some reason, mouse clicks aren't captured properly. Half the time, clicking causes the window to be deselected and go into the background, as if I had clicked on another application window or on the desktop. The other half of the time, some totally random part of the window receives the click. For example, clicks on dropdown lists in Firefox have been redirected to address bar and clicks on hyperlinks have been redirected to the scrollbar. Has anybody managed to figure out a way around this issue? I suppose this is more of a question for VMware, but then again, it never hurts to ask :)

Linux Mint is funded by ads and donations.

Before all else, you need to determine if your machine and host OS has enough juice (x64, dual core processor, plus 8+gb memory) to run multiple OS's seamlessly.
I run both VMware workstation 8 and virtualbox sometimes simultaneously. I have found more problems with VMware than with vbox related to the areas you are describing. You can also checking the VMware forums, but Virtualbox is an easy and inexpensive (0 cost) alternative.

I would suggest installing both Ubuntu and Mint Debian in vbox. Because of the difference in the way drivers are created in vbox, you will have the added benefit of using compiz in Mint Debian. I have not experienced the mouse issues in vbox.

Now, all that being said, I'm not endorsing Virtualbox because it also has occasional issues. I've used VMware (both in server environments and desktop) since about 2005 and found it to be a very stable production environment, but when it comes to linux desktops, I really prefer the added flexibility of Virtualbox.

The host is a Core i7 2600K with 16 GB of RAM.

I tried using VMware Workstation for Windows guests (where VMware is far superior) and VirtualBox for Linux guests (where Vbox is far superior) simultaneously about a year or 2 ago, but while VMware is fine with sharing, VBox demands exclusive access to the VT-x bit and it won't run any VMs while VMware is running :x

In the end, I decided to stick with VMware as I have far more Windows VMs than Linux VMs, but has the Vbox situation changed since then?

I usually have 1 VMware and 2 VBox guests running concurrently on an 8Gb dual core host notebook without any noticeable problems. The host OS is Ubuntu 10.10. The guests are Deb Sqz, Mint Deb and Lisa. I've also run Windows 7 or XP while running the 2 debs.

Just gave VirtualBox another try. While I'm happy to say that it now works with VMware Workstation, it's still quite buggy - restoration of snapshots frequently causes VBox to crash, resulting in a slightly corrupted VM. Additionally, Seamless Mode doesn't work properly with dual monitors. Overall, I suppose the VBox + LMDE experience is about on par with the VMware + Mint 12 experience - bearable, but not very good

By the way, since VBox doesn't officially support Mint either, what do you guys pick under OS Version when setting up the VM? Debian? Or just generic Linux 2.6.x?

After a week of fiddling and Googling, I finally managed to get to the bottom of the mouse and Unity mode issues, which share an underlying cause:

The vmmouse driver needed by VMware is not installed by default. If anybody else having this problem and comes across this post, run "sudo apt-get install xserver-xorg-input-vmmouse" (without the quotes) in order to manually install the driver and fix this issue.
