Mint 12 KDE release

Postby KBD47 on Fri Feb 03, 2012 2:16 pm

Glad to see Lisa KDE has arrived. I tried out the RC when it was first released and it just looked like a warmed over version of Kubuntu. KDE Lisa final looks very nice and has the Mint touch. I'm trying it out live usb via Unetbootin and it is working well and saving my settings across restarts. The only thing I'm a bit disappointed with is that the fonts are still a bit weak and spidery. I've tweaked them but they just aren't as nice as in Ubuntu or in Netrunner. Really need to figure out what Netrunner does to improve their fonts. Kubuntu fonts are always bad.
Other than that it feels pretty solid and looks good.

PS--I just finished a short review on my blog about KDE Lisa if you want to check it out:

@KBD47
Very nice article. Maybe somebody over at Netrunner can help you with the fonts.
The last Kubuntu got a lot of love from many of the reviews -- except for Muon. So Mint KDE should be excellent.

Thanks. I have found with other OS that my screen looks best with hinting set to slight, anti-aliasing enabled, and dpi set to 96. My browsers font looks fine, websites look fine, but the system fonts look bad, I even changed those from Ubuntu to Deja Vu Sans but nothings helps. I found the same thing in Kubuntu & Mepis with KDE, and once I installed Kubuntu desktop onto Ubuntu and it wrecked my fonts, I uninstalled Kubuntu desktop from Ubuntu and removed the font config file then finally got my good fonts back, so there is something odd either with KDE or Kubuntu's fontconfig.

Thanks. Netrunner is the only KDE desktop I've found with really good fonts. One thing I forgot to mention in the article is that on netbooks Mint KDE doesn't assume you want that bizarre-looking netbook desktop like Kubuntub does, I actually got the nice, normal KDE desktop with Mint, another plus for Mint KDE.

I'm glad to hear about the latest release.
However, I don't want to download the whole DVD image; I'd rather just install the Mintified KDE as a login option to my LM12 setup. Same reason I'm loath to install Kubuntu (204MB please!) - it doesn't really have a minimal install metapackage.

Shouldn't there be a 'mint-meta-kde' package and when is it coming? :)
Using xfce v4.8 on LMDE and Linux Mint 12.

Everything worked well on my Acer em350 netbook. I did a fresh install just to check things out, although I could simply have updated the RC. My only (minor) gripe so far is the 354MB of zero-day updates. This is no great problem for my home computers, but it will be a real nuisance as I update machines belonging to friends and family, quite a few of whom only have slow Internet connections. It's the price of progress, I suppose.

Wow! The last GNOME version had 223 files in the update and was about 100 to 150 MB . I thought that was too much.

Installed KDE RC on a friends new PC and he keeps reporting that he has bug reports and all sorts of crashes , dont know if he been updating . would the usual updates mean he should have the final? He has come over from windows and is now seriously considering going back :(
