Flickering mouse Icon

I recently installed Mint 12 KDE on a friends new HP laptop. An annoying(not counting HP taking all primary partitions) problem I have not been able to fix is the cursor flickers when it is on or near icons. Any trick I have seen to fix this in various forums is over 3 years old...has anyone else had this problem? And does anyone know of a fix? I did update his shell to KDE 4.8, but the cursor problem predated the upgrade.
