Laptop suspend from shell extension locks up machine

When I select "Shut Down... | Suspend" everything locks up and it cannot be restarted (requires a hard reboot). The suspend functionality does work when I close the lid and resumes when I open the lid. Is there an alternate to that shell extension. I recently disabled the multimedia shell extension because it would randomly hang the machine but mouse would be movable (and hard reset was required to get it back in that case also). Disabling the multimedia extension fixed that lockup but now this one is happening, should I disable this extension also?
