Banshee causes Xorg to freeze

Postby scorchgeek on Mon Jan 02, 2012 7:28 pm

I made a nice clean install of Mint yesterday (I was an unhappy Ubuntu user) and love everything---except every so often, my desktop locks up solid.

When it happens, I cannot select anything in any programs, open the GNOME 3 menu (or use the relevant keyboard shortcuts) or really anything else. The mouse still moves, however, and I can still select windows. I can also still switch to virtual terminals and access the machine via SSH. The problem can be remedied by pressing Alt-SysRq-K or running "killall Xorg" and restarting the entire desktop. However, after restarting programs and waiting about fifteen or twenty minutes, it does it again.

After an afternoon of letting the computer idle and checking to see if it had crashed, I determined the culprit was Banshee. After playing about five songs, it would cause the freeze. The system ran rock solid for a couple of hours without any music playing, and is currently running fine with VLC playing music, so it's not the audio driver.

How would I go about trying to fix this? I couldn't find anything relevant searching Google. If it matters, I'm using the 64-bit version of Mint 12.

I had the same problem yesterday ... I took it to be the result of doing too much at the same time. I was downloading all my podcasts to update the library, transferring files from back up and installing new software at the same time ... it froze for about an hour then it was fine. I'm trying to duplicate it today to see if I can make it freeze again. I'll get back to you if I find out anything ...

I got the same problem to repeat yesterday ... I switched to cinnamon and I took out my graphics card driver which was causing other problems ... now everything seems to be running better ... had Banshee running with Chromium and other things happening but hasn't frozen yet ... fingers crossed ... Sadly, I'm not sure if it's the switch to Cinnamon or the graphics driver, or something else entirely.

I'm getting random freezes, too. I also thought that Banshee was causing this, as the freezes only occur when I'm playing music, so I installed Rhythmbox. However, I get the same problem when using Rhythmbox.

I've experienced the system hanging with both Banshee and Clementine while I was also using Chromium--a coincidence?

Thanks for the link. I tried to install the two patches, but got error messages, but I'm a CLI klutz--sometimes even copying and pasting code doesn't work for me. FWIW, I uninstalled Cinnamon and have been playing music on Banshee for the past hour, with several tabs open on Chromium and [knock on wood] no system hanging or freezes so far. :)

Perhaps a forthcoming system update will include the patches and resolve the problem once and for all?

Sorry, folks, I no sooner posted that all went well with Banshee after posting that I had uninstalled Cinnamon, when Banshee froze, i.e., the music kept playing but I couldn't get it to quit. The keyboard and mouse continued to work, but when I tried to log out, I couldn't access the log-out or shut-down window and had to do a hard shutdown. Perhaps it's a Gnome issue? What do I know?

Effectly is banshee that cause the present problem. The linux mint 12 is perfect except for that bug. I can open 10 or more firefoxs instances for hours without getting any troubles.
The VLC is an effective alternative.
Rhythmbox uses the same library for playing songs as banshee, and produces the same bug.
Banshee should not come as an default application as its produce this bug. It's a shame because banshee is a good one.
