FTP while hosting from your own computer [SOLVED]

Postby ananmad on Sat Feb 18, 2012 12:05 am

Alright, so visiting my IP shows my HTML file. But visiting my domain - which is supposed to link to my IP - does not. So, is this where FTP comes in? And if it does, using Filezilla, how would I upload files from my own computer if i'm my own host? Sorry if all of this seems stupid to a lot of you, this is just knowledge that I have yet to attain.

Linux Mint is funded by ads and donations.

Have somebody else try to access your domain. They will likely also not be able to access your computer that way, as your broadband modem's firewall is blocking unsolicited connections from the Internet (connecting from your computer to your domain, first goes to the Internet to the server hosting the domain, from which it is then sent back to your computer, then being blocked as described). You have to setup your broadband modem to forward incoming traffic on port 80 (from the Internet) to your computer.

I figured it out - my router doesn't give me the capability of having a "global ip address" which is needed in order to have an ftp server. Yadayada all said and done, and my router isn't accepting the protocol properly. Sorry for the useless post...

You can get around not having a static IP address by getting a free account at http://dyn.com/. Most routers will have a place where you can input your dyndns account info so that it will keep your dynamic IP from your ISP updated to the dyndns servers.
The instructions suggested Microsoft Vista or better, so I installed Linux.
