But what do we do if we're not running a nvidia card?? I'm on Intel HD 3000 (Intel Core i5 2nd generation processor), and I'm seeing the same exact problem . . .

BTW, I could only run the live CD and install LM12 when I modified the GRUB settings to i915.modeset=0. Classic Gnome has been present the whole time, and I can't change it, not even after installing and loading Cinnamon 1.3. Is LM12 not compatible with Intel's new processor?

Linux Mint works just fine on that processor. I have an i5-2500K on an Asus P8H67-V motherboard (so, the full Sandy Bridge chipset, and HD3000 graphics), and Mint 12 is working fine on it. I will say, however, that I had a similar glitch a few days ago. After a fresh install, everything was working fine. I fiddled around a bit, checking out the default programs, etc... and the Update Manager indicated there were some 322 updates needed. I let it do its thing, and went to bed. In the morning, I rebooted the machine (I had to fix a BIOS setting) and when it came back up I was stuck in "fallback mode" in the DE. It turns out, there's something in those 322 updates that toasts the mgse-* package. I reinstalled it from the Software Manager, logged out, and "Gnome" was back on the menu -- switched to it, and it loaded up fine.
need I say more??

What do you mean that the mgse package was toast? Was it no longer installed, or did you figure out somehow that it was corrupted? Should I remove it and then re-install it?

I'm on the i5-2467M processor with a Mobile Intel HM65 Express chipset.

On my system, the package was no longer showing as installed (and, there was no "Gnome" selection on the login screen, either!). I installed the package, logged out of the session, selected the now-appearing "Gnome" and logged in. Problem solved. Don't know for sure which package broke the mgse-* stuff, but a re-install of that package seemed to fix things up for me.

Yeah, the Gnome option still shows up for me, but even if I choose it I get Classic Gnome. MGSE package present and accounted for . . .

I'll keep looking around for solutions.

A friend of mine said that LM12 might not be recognizing my system for some reason (one side effect I described was a low resolution with no option to choose a higher one, and LM12 not recognizing that my monitor belongs to a laptop). But I looked at my system info, and everything is accounted for.

Memory 2.7 GiB (original specs was 4 GB)
Processor Intel® Core™ i5-2467M CPU @ 1.60GHz × 4
Graphics VESA: Intel®Sandybridge Mobile Graphics
OS type 32-bit (my computer can actually handle 64-bit, but I switched to 32-bit thinking it would help)
Disk 121.9 GB

Anyone have any ideas??? My Gnome 3 problem persists . . .

I don't have any NVIDIA related thingy in my PC, but
Code: Select all
sudo apt-get purge nvidia*
solved the problem for me, and Gnome 3 works just fine! (I am using Ubuntu 11.10)

Ok, I'm a dork. Finally figured out that the underlying problem was a backlight issue, and once I employed the right fix my Gnome 3 issue went away.

So if you're using an HP Folio and have Gnome 3 and monitor resolution issues after having had trouble installing and loading LM or Ubuntu, do not modify GRUB's modeset. Edit GRUB in the following way instead during startup.

Right before 'quiet splash' enter
Code: Select all
acpi_backlight=vendor

Then, CTRL-X to boot.

After logging into LM/Ubuntu, permanently change your GRUB settings.
Code: Select all
sudo gedit /etc/default/grub

In the GRUB file, replace GRUB_CMDLINE_LINUX="" with GRUB_CMDLINE_LINUX="acpi_backlight=vendor"
Hit SAVE and close the file. Then in the terminal
Code: Select all
sudo update-grub

Found this fix at viewtopic.php?f=42&t=45271, which was referenced in an ubuntuforums.org thread on HP Folio (http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php? ... t=hp+folio, first page, post #10).
