File sharing Issues

Postby Cybertek on Mon Feb 20, 2012 8:32 pm

Thanks to several fine folks that helped me with an issue regarding changeing the hostname. Now I have another question, I have been working on and off trying to get the file sharing setup. I have to Linux machines joined to samba, all machines see each other, and by the correct hostnames (thanks again). Here is the situation, when I share a folder (lets say documents) on machine 1 (Linux), then I set the permissions and share name (usually) default, the folder shows up as shared. When I try to access it, I am challenged for a username and password, I have tried every combonation possible, tweaked the permissions and shares, groups user accounts and evrything else I can think of. I guess having a very good knowledge of Windows AD and LDAP does not carry over to Linux systems. I am sure it is something that I am doing wrong or not doing at all. So, I need one of you experts to help me learn this the Linux way, or point me to where I can teach myself, thanks again for your time.

Whatever experience I have with samba does not include AD or LDAP so there will be a limit as to how far I can help you with your dilemma. There is only one thing that you did not mention in your description of how you set up the share on Linux: You did not set the samba password for the Linux user.

Code: Select all
sudo smbpasswd -a user-name

In Windows there is only the user and password. In Linux there is the Linux user and his associated login password and then there is the Samba password for that Linux user. The passwords ( login vs samba ) do not have to match in Linux although you can force it to match with the package: libpam-smbpass.
Please add a [SOLVED] at the end of your original subject header if your question has been answered and solved.
