Firefox wont play on external USB audio

Postby Lophiomys on Sun Feb 19, 2012 2:43 pm

Hi,

Firefox does not output sound to properly connected and setup USB audio device (Roland Cakewalk UA-1G).
A radio stream or the sound of a Youtube video end up on the internal loud speakers (via internal Intel sound card ICH6) !

Amarok and MiniTube do use the USB audio device.
Phonon is configured to ues the USB audio sound card as preferred device.
Phonon uses VLC as a backend, because this handles streaming audio sources without intermittent or permanent connection loss after source switch.
The mint-flash package was reinstalled, no solution.

Everything works just Firefox does not get sound output right!

Any ideas?

Thanks in advance.

This is most likely a problem with Adobe Flash. Make sure the external audio is set as default on the Output tab of the sound settings (in System Settings for Mint 12 users).

Not so shure.
In System Settings - Phonon - Audio Hardware Setup
I set the UA1G external USB Audio soundcard, Apply, Test left and right speaker works nicely (also Amarok always works on the external USB audio).
The UA1G is also set as preferred device everywhere.
Then I close Systems Settings, reopen it, and see that the "Internal Soundcard" is selected again.
Something is resetting the sound card to "internal" after closing the Systems Settings of Phonon.

Besides:
- KMix is hanging on startup, showing up as icon on the Task Bar only and then dissappearing.
- Sometimes Mint KDE is popping up a message box, asking me if it should to permanently forgett about the UA1G external usb audio device,
because it pretends it was removed, which is not the case. This also happens after wakup from suspend to RAM.
- Under SUSE 11.3 KDE the very same external USB sound card has worked without problems, also with Firefox/FlashPlayer.

Updating to KDE 4.8.0 did not help either.

Editing sound card preferences for ALSA did not help either.

kdesudo kate /etc/modprobe.d/alsa-base.conf
...
options snd-usb-audio index=0
options snd-intel8x0m index=1
options saa7134-alsa index=2
...
according to

That setup you wrote in alsa-base.conf is very specific to the hardware of the people in the Ubuntu threads. It's only the right configuration for someone who uses USB audio (snd-usb-audio), an MC'97 dial-up modem connected to Intel or SiS chipset (snd-intel8x0m), and a Philips SAA7134-based TV tuner card (saa7134-alsa). I'm afraid your setup is a little different.

Thanks for the clarification. Seems I was too fast with copy and paste.

Are there any news, on how to make FlashPlayer 11.2 to play to external USB audio devices?

I know it's possible. It works under my system, but I'm using KXStudio on top of Mint KDE, and that means using JACK and ALSA stuff… I can't explain it all, I'm not an expert. The settings I have work though. Anyway, it all works on my system.
