I posted this in Newbie, but got no response, so I thought I might try here instead.
Very often (almost every time I start-up) the screen freezes. I'm guessing it has something to do with conflicting graphic drivers, but I don't know where to look or what to change. (As you'll see in the details below, I have a separate graphics board - I'm running my old Dell CRT (#M993s) out of its VGA port).
When the screen freezes, the background is usually black, sometimes bright red.
There's a bit of a foreground image which moves when I move the mouse (like a cursor): it looks like it might be one frame of the hourglass/time-passing animation disk, along with some random pixels, maybe in a 30 x 30 pixel area. Maybe the panel applet is causing the problem?
If I press F10 repeatedly while starting up, I can usually bypass the problem, but not always. Various escape methods (Ctrl + Alt, Ctrl + Alt + Esc, Ctrl + Esc, Ctrl + Alt + Backspace) don't have any effect. I tried keeping Shift pressed during start-up: I won't try that again! - it really froze me out for a while.
Often when closing (after successful use) the system freezes again, with some graphic noise in the top-left corner which looks like large pixels.
Also, for now, am unable to watch videos from DVD, but can watch flash videos.
Looking at the package manager, I have NVIDIA driver 270.41.06 installed, but maybe I'm missing something else?
