Old guy, new user

Probably a story you have heard before but, windows 7 crashed. Black screen, blinking cursor. Tried the boot thing. Tried everything. I am NOT a computer expert or even close to it. I can do basic things but that's about it. Had the computer guy at work look at it. Said the partition was damaged and the solution was to re install windows 7 which was going to cost me.

So he put me on to Linux. I tried out unbuntu, didn't like. Tried open suse, wouldn't work right. Tried Linux mint KDE, couldn't understand it. Then tried Linux Mint 12 Gnome 3 and thought it was great.

Fortunately windows 7 was still there and I could transfer all of my files. My guy put me in touch with WINE and all but one of my old programs works. So I lost almost nothing switching over. And my son has been telling me for years to switch. He's right. I like Mint 12. It's easy, infinitely faster than Win 7 which I liked until it crashed. None of those constant restarts and downloads and updates. I don't foresee ever going back.

Linux Mint 12 breathed new life into this 3 year old Toshiba!

Welcome to the Mint forums. There's also a chatbox where you can get real-time help (except for complex problems, perhaps): viewtopic.php?f=17&t=55884
You can just open XChat from the menu to get there.

You'll probably like the Cinnamon desktop as well: http://blog.linuxmint.com/?p=1910
That blog article is already a bit old, Cinnamon 1.3.1 is now ready for download at: https://github.com/linuxmint/Cinnamon/downloads
Cinnamon also has its own website describing the improvements in 1.3.1 and before, if you're interested: http://cinnamon.linuxmint.com/

And I'm indeed familiar with crashed Windows, not limited to 7 however.

Hi HoosierJoe, welcome to the Linux Mint forums :D Praise for your willingness to try different distros to find one that works for you  I figure it took some time to get your computer working again, but sounds like you had excellent help!

For any Windows programs that do give you problems with Wine, you can also search online for Linux native alternatives to Windows programs: http://alternativeto.net/software/?profile=linux
