I guess that the Kubuntu repos are more "Bleeding Edge" than the Ubuntu repos, and the Mint KDE backports must be assigned to the Ubuntu repos rather than the Kubuntu repos. I added the Kubuntu repos and 4.8 installed just fine.

I was looking at this: http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=1889034

And I was wondering, if I want to install KDE 4.8, do I have to do it through the backports? Can I instead just use the kubuntu-ppa/ppa as listed there even though I'm running Linux Mint KDE, or no?

By "this" you mean earlier in this same thread?? I'm asking whether I can substitute the whole kubunutu normal ppa instead, and what would that do?
I understand this is a silly question, but I'm trying to understand how this stuff works...

Well, I just decided to do the backports anyway. So far, everything is just fine. I've had some quirks in my system, but overall good now. No problem with anything crashing. I'm really loving Linux and KDE!

Well, I updated to KDE 4.8 using the Ubuntu repos. Everything works great except Kmail. Kmail blows up alot. But it did before I updated from 4.7 to 4.8 anyway. I think it's an Akonadi thig that is causing this too.

Well, there are problems with KMail in 4.8 For example:
KDE Applications Issues

+ KDEPim related issues

- KMail has been upgraded from Kmail 4.4.11.1 (in Mageia 1) to KMail 4.8.x .

The major change is related to Kmail which is now Akonadi based. You should be asked by an utility to either upgrade your installation or start from a fresh configuration.

- Bogofilter is broken with KMail 4.8.x .

Currently using the bogofilter to filter mail under kmail produces empty emails. This a know issue ( see mga 5838 and KDEPIM Devel mailing list. The only workaround currently is to disable bogofilter.
(https://wiki.mageia.org/en/Mageia_2_Err ... ons_Issues)

It's in the Mageia Wiki but this problem with Bogofilter is a known issue by the KDE devs too.
