How can I "hibernate" ?

Postby newbie_noob on Thu Mar 01, 2012 2:47 pm

Hi, I can send my netbook to suspend on ram, but I see no option to hibernate (suspend on hdd) on lmde, is there a way to activate such an option if it exists? On LMKDE there is an option for that is this because suspending on hdd is an implementation from ubuntu and not from debian?
Thank you a lot.

You can hibernate by using the exit menu. In my system, this is the second option starting from the left.

Do you have a swap partition ?
Linux Mint 10 was the best !
Currently using LMDE64 & Cinnamon. Working well ! Thanks !

It's not an Ubuntu invention, it should exist on all Linux distros as long as there's a swap partition on your harddisk.

I only have Suspend/Restart/Cancel/Shutdown

But you are right I have no swap partition.

If I make one by booting on a live-usb with gparted and reboot, will LMDE "detect" that I now have a swap partition and add an hibernate option on the Quit menu of the Mint menu?

Thank you

edit with a quick question: I added two times "windows list" on my bottom pannel of gnome and one to remove one of them, but I don't know any other way to remove widgets from the bar than by right-clicking on them, and this method does not work with that widget.

Yes.

About windowlist, the cinnamon developers (including me) are currently looking for a way to work around this.

Is there a config file somewhere that I could edit for the pannel?

edit:
- can't run gparted on my netbook currently with my live usb of lmde because it asks for root password, I can't neither use sudo su, sudo passwd, su or login as root.
- I also have this problem with this live usb of lmde: viewtopic.php?f=46&t=96035 (I want to install it on my other laptop)

Which program did you use to make the Live USB? Please try another one, or use an Ubuntu-based Mint edition as there's no root password necessary on them.

Back to the OP, it's a bit more detailed to enable hibernate than just adding a new swap parition (post-install). The following link shows how I got the elusive hibernate to work.

Hope this helps.

I'll loan this topic. I dual boot LMDE gnome 32 bit and Windows XP. I have both options, hibernate and suspend, but my swap partition is probably too small (519 mb swap compared to 2 gb ram) for actually using these because when trying to do so I get a black screen and a PM that there's not enough swap. I originally run another distro alongside WIN XP and installed LMDE on top of it. I guess the previous distro created/chose the smallish swap size (I haven't creataed/altered it myself). So I assume I'd better increase the swap size. How do I do this? Reading earlier replies I'd boot with the gparted software. Does the LMDE live boot disc have this? Any precautions one would need to take?

Most Mint live discs have GParted installed, and if it isn't installed you can get it from the repository.

Thanks AlbertP, much appreciated. Now I'm confronted with another problem.

I've created a larger swap partition. Although not 3 gb but 2,5 gb - I didn't find a way to merge partitons so I deleted one unnecessary (or rather, eh, unknow) partition and formatted it as swap... and then googled how to include it in etc/fstab. Anyhow, the suspend option doesn't do anything else than to blacken the screen and - I can't tell for sure, but I guess - shuts down the hard drive. The psu fan, for example, runs as normal and the computer is as noisy as in use. If I were to hibernate it shuts the computer down completely and it will only react to the actual on/off button on the computer case, and when pressed, it will do a normal/full start up.

So suspend does "too little" and hibernate "too much", if you understand what I mean. Can I fix this? I'd like to hibernate in the sense that computer is shut down but will resume to where I was before hibernating.

My guess is that since you created a new swap, the uuid needs to be modified in the resume. You will probably also need to re-generate the initramfs. For specifics, either search in the Mint Debian forums or take a look at the link I posted above.

DataMan: I followed the instructions in the link you previously posted in this thread. And to sum things up: it works but I was forced to undo some changes. At first I tried to do precisely as in the instructions. But when I rebooted my computer it didn't detect any operative system whatsoever. After this I booted with my live dvd and tried to undo the damage. With my newbie skills I was able to undo all steps besides the action to "sudo update-initramfs -u". As a sidenote, it might be that I did something wrong in this step because I wasn't 100% sure what was supposed to be left out/substituted. (well, I had done first step before (to change the uuid in /etc/fstab) which I didn't change back to the pre-new swap partition). Anyway, now I can hibernate the way I want (not that fast, but alright anyway). So thanks!
