Please post a flow chart/diagram for Mint etc

Postby nathanjh13 on Sat Mar 03, 2012 7:41 pm

Hiya, can somebody please post a flow chart/network diagram or any "at a glance" visual aid to help me and I think countless others comprehend the Mint version/s DE's and Window managers therein. How they interact and how, once they're downloaded how they're enabled etc. Even just what the main ones are called and the like will do, I've got to start somewhere. I'm downloading Dia and I'm going to try myself but I know it will be full of misinformation. Clear distinctions would be superb, dotted lines can be used to connect items that don't work so well together etc.

It's dizzing. I loved 11 and now 12 is like learning everything all over again (I've gotten used to the top left corner thing and don't mind it). In Gnome Shell Extensions there isn't even a search option, just categories of Most Popular/Name/Version etc (let me guess I have to enable a search box??!). Even the simplest feature requires several steps of enablement and the Advanced Settings graphic of a guy's head splitting open with so much junk couldn't have been better represented. The old spinning cube was great and being able to see what windows I had open even better without searching around. I've downloaded MATE but i've no idea how to even activate it etc or where it would even sit in the flow chart.

I've never known so many options and so much terminology. I know you're further down the line than I am and it's very straightforward to you, but I have friends trying this and they find it astoundingly complex and "way too much of a learning curve" and they're not idiots just used to straightforward approaches. I'm more patient than they are, but I share their concerns.

If you could help me (and others) make a start to what does what and what they're called, then us newbies might be able to take two steps forward.

Many thanks (and please remember, I'm on your side).

Why not at least SEARCH the forums a bit before asking a question asked so many times before? I'm sorry, I'm not trying to be rude or anything...
viewtopic.php?f=90&t=54945#p314893
(Look at Robin's (R.I.P.) post--it is perhaps one of THE BEST explanations out there)

As to making a chart/diagram, I think that given the simplistic information presented, you can make it yourself?
See you around the forums!

Thanks, but that's not exactly what I wanted. You're right though, I'll do it myself.

Documentation is indeed thin for many Linux releases but after a few years of use I have grown to accept that as a fact of life. Its part of the larger overall learning curve that makes the average Linux uses a lot more computer literate then some of their average MS using brethren.
However it would be nice to have a flowchart presentation, perhaps you could do one up and submit it to the Developers for community use. I am sure folks would appreciate your efforts.
As an alternative other distros have different levels of documentation and support. Red Hat has killer printed and paid support for example. CentOS is cheaper but most og the RH documentation is still applicable. Debian is not as good for documentation as it could be but its not too bad either. I guess what I am saying is that there are alternatives out there id Mint is not working for you. Good luck & enjoy.

It doesn't sound like you're on anyone's side but your own. Why attack someone for providing a link to some very good information? The post that was linked wasn't that long to start with.

What you're asking for obviously doesn't exist so why not get in the spirit of open-source, get involved and make a flowchart to share with others?

IMO what you want couldn't be represented in a "quick visual reference" anway.

So long.

Try the really thorough Wiki at Ubuntuusers. Their information is very comprehensive.

nathanjh13, it looks like there is no such image. You could make a draft, post that and ask for feedback to perfect your understanding?

Good points, I should relax more :o) I'll have a play around and post something eventually.
All the best, thanks again.

PS Arran, the link you sent is German, I'll have a look for a translate.

Don't. The electronic translations form German into English (and the other way round) are hilarious and 80% ununderstandable. I speak both languages fluently (and French too). So , sorry to say, you've got to learn it.
French --> English and back are much better.

But there might be a solution. As more and more Germans are able to command a reasonably good english, you might get positive results by asking in Ubuntuusers.de in English. They will not tear your head off.

No problem, thanks.

I've created a one page .pdf (LM_Desktops.pdf) with big pictures at the bottom of the following link.

I think it will be very helpful for very new users but I duly bow to your better judgement.

http://sites.google.com/site/nathanjh13/home/linux-mint-desktop-environments

Thanks all
Nath

PS The font may look peculiar and seems to work better if the file is downloaded rather than opened online :/

There are two typo's that I'll correct later on, and maybe switch the text to lowercase.

If anything, it was an exercise for me in how to use Dia, but I figured I might as well produce something for the greater good.

Many thanks
Nathan

PS I found Dia a little clumsy and will try to use Lucidchart in future perhaps.

Hi Nath

I am sorry, I can not download your PDF. I refuse to subscribe to anything from Google (or Yahoo or any other of these address sellers). So the content there is not availbale to me. Why did you not attach the PDF to your posting? Just click on the «Upload attachment» button in the editing window, search the location of your PDF and «Add the file».

I couldn't attach the .pdf as it was too large so I've gone for an image instead. Sorry for the runaround.
Corrections welcomed and expected.
