grub2 and linux mint 12 not working.. tryed everything...

Postby neomaxi on Mon Mar 05, 2012 11:26 am

I installed windows 8 preview and now i can't get into grub.

This is what I tryed.

1. tryed booting in Live CD and doing mounting the drive and doing this.
sudo grub-install --root-directory=/mnt/ /dev/sdd (sdd5 is where my linux is installed and where the boot/grub is )

when i do this and reboot, i just get to a grub> prompt.....

2. i tryed downloading boot-repair when in live CD, but the program hangs on "seaching for drives.."

what else can I try??

Linux Mint is funded by ads and donations.

sudo grub-install --root-directory=/mnt/ /dev/sdd

I don't know if this is a typo, but there shouldn't be a trailing / after /mnt.

I tryed with and withough the trailing / and it still doesn't work.

I just get to a grub prompt on restart...

hi neomaxi,
just to try to eliminate possible errors, are you sure you mounted sdd5 ie the partition, not the drive? mount command would be
Code: Select all
sudo mount /dev/sdd5 /mnt
then
Code: Select all
sudo grub-install --root-directory=/mnt /dev/sdd
note - there's a gap between =/mnt and /dev, and no partition number after sdd. re-boot into Mint then
Code: Select all
sudo update-grub

does that help?
