how to safely uninstall linux mint

Postby thevenerable on Mon Mar 05, 2012 3:24 pm

Hi
I have a netbook with tripel boot..
windows xp, windows 7, and linux mint.
When i turn on the computer, i get the linux mint booter selection appear, where i can leave it as it is, and it will run linux, or i can select windows 7 loader, and either choose xp, or 7 from there.

I want to remove linux mint, but am worried it will ruin or mess with my windows boot ups?
This happened when i removed ubuntu from my pc, and now booting in to windows is a pain.

Please advise how to i uninstall mint or over-write it without causing boot issues.

thanks

Linux Mint is funded by ads and donations.

You need to do this from Windows. On Windows 7 use the instructions in http://support.microsoft.com/kb/927392 to repair the MBR - this should remove grub. Once you've done this you can just delete the mint partitions in the Windows disc manager.

well, i was a little dubious about it.
So i decided to install ubuntu directly over the linux mint instead. i thought it mayeb safer, and also ubuntu may run softwares better.

I figured it would just knock out the linux mint booter, and replace it with the unbutu booter.
I allocated the correct drive, and allocated the small partition for the swap drive.
Thought i did it all right...
but hey presto..
nothing at all boots up now.

i get the error: the symbol 'grub_xpust' not found
Then a 'grub recue>' prompt that i have no idea what to do with.

please advise..
please someone make the nightmare end

You need to boot up your ubuntu live cd, open the browser, and go to this site: https://help.ubuntu.com/community/Grub2 ... ling_GRUB2. Follow steps #4 and #5.

I dont have cd, only usb.

Its ok, i booted from windows 7 usb, fixed booter, formated ubuntu partition, made a fresh partition for the swap files, re-installed ubuntu.
I'm good.. bloody good

I'm glad that worked out for you. This one sounds to be a interesting way to get things back to the normal ways.
