Well that didn't last long....don't like KDE...to use to using LMDE. Hey Gerd....did you get all the updates on your system before you installed xiphos, you know, kernel 3.2.0-1......that's where I'm at now and xiphos won't work....I'll even throw in the output of inxi -r:

Code: Select all
andrew@lmde:~$ inxi -r
Repos:     Active apt sources in file: /etc/apt/sources.list
deb http://packages.linuxmint.com/ debian main upstream import backport romeo
deb http://debian.linuxmint.com/latest testing main contrib non-free
           deb http://debian.linuxmint.com/latest/multimedia testing main non-free
           deb http://www.debian-multimedia.org wheezy main non-free
           deb http://www.debian-multimedia.org sid main non-free
deb http://ftp.us.debian.org/debian/ sid main contrib non-free
           deb http://debian.linuxmint.com/latest/security testing/updates main contrib non-free

I went through debian testing along with what's above and got the kernel, then disabled testing....everything is up to date, then installed xiphos, but it won't completely start up....it'll start briefly then close....also, I don't have any admin privilages to make changes to files...I added them in Package Manager, but I still don't have anything....any ideas?.....cheers

Has anyone installed the recent update to the module-init-tools package, and the two new dependencies that come with it, please? The whole thing looks a bit ominous to me, although I couldn't say exactly why. Many thanks.

Hi Brian

module-init-tools upgraded for me yesterday with no apparent problems.

However, upon investigating, I find this description in synaptic.
Code: Select all
module-init-tools 6-1
transitional dummy package (module-init-tools to kmod)

This dummy package is provided to support the transition from
module-init-tools to kmod and should be removed afterwards.

I do find kmod 6-1 installed,
Code: Select all
gene@zordon:~$  apt-cache policy kmod
kmod:
  Installed: 6-1
  Candidate: 6-1
  Version table:
 *** 6-1 0
        500 http://http.us.debian.org/debian/ unstable/main amd64 Packages
        100 /var/lib/dpkg/status

so it appears module-init-tools is not be needed any more, but did not get deleted?
Code: Select all
gene@zordon:~$ apt-cache policy module-init-tools
module-init-tools:
  Installed: 6-1
  Candidate: 6-1
  Version table:
 *** 6-1 0
        500 http://http.us.debian.org/debian/ unstable/main amd64 Packages

It would appear that module-init-tools can't be removed even after the update, as a load of system-critical packages still depend on it, including the kernel. So either the Synaptic blurb about removing it is baloney, or else a so-far-unknown config change is needed somewhere so that those packages come to depend solely on kmod.

There are quite a few posts on this matter in the Arch forums, but no clear answers?
http://www.archlinux.org/news/kmod-repl ... nit-tools/
News: kmod replaces module-init-tools
2012-01-21 - Dave Reisner
With module-init-tools being declared a dead project by its current maintainer, a new project has stepped up to take its place: kmod. This is intended to be a drop-in replacement, though deprecated functionality in module-init-tools has not been reimplemented.

If, upon upgrade, pacman moves /etc/modprobe.d/modprobe.conf to a .pacsave, you should move it back. This file, and any other config read by module-init-tools, is still read by kmod. However, the kmod package will no longer include a blank config file. You'll find the same (if not more) documentation in the manpages and --help output for the binaries.

As everything is working fine for me, I am going to leave it there.

I've downgraded to the previous version of module-init-tools, and removed kmod and its library. While updating initramfs-tools today, I got a series of nasty messages in the terminal about missing modules, which I suspect had something to do with this kmod business.

I see kmod is currently flagged by apt-listbugs.

http://bugs.debian.org/cgi-bin/bugreport.cgi?bug=662891

I notice in the bug report it says the bug (only?) breaks debian kernels. I roll my own kernel from liquorix source. Does anyone know if this bug affects liquorix kernels?

That is not working this time and I am left at a command prompt.
All my old kernels won't start my nvidia either.
I am using the non-free drivers.
Any suggestions on what to try?
My nvidia cards are not happy with 3.2 and proprietary drivers, but try asking Zerozero. (Maybe use the sid breakages thread, since you're tracking sid)

Re: LMDE (Tracking SID, or..) BREAKAGES! - Mar 5

Postby dcihon on Sat Mar 10, 2012 11:33 am

Guys I posted this over in Cinnamon (SID) thread.
Didn't know how to move it or delete.
I am re posting it here as I was instructed to do.

OK guys now I have a bigger problem with my desktop Computer.
Seems one of my updates updated my kernel to 3.2.0-2.
Well that has broken my nvidia from loading.
I had fixed this issue with past kernel updates by running the module assistant commands for the nvidia kernel.
That is not working this time and I am left at a command prompt.
All my old kernels won't start my nvidia either.
I am using the non-free drivers.
Any suggestions on what to try?

I solved the problem by deleting /run , recreating it as normal folder and rebooting the system :D

What happens to the contents of /run when you do that - do they automatically get recreated as well? Thanks.

/run is a temp folder and so, when you rebooting the system, the files are recrated
