Upgrading: skip releases?

Postby gurmint on Thu Mar 08, 2012 1:30 pm

This may be a silly question, but I can't find a specific answer for Linux Mint, so please forgive this aficionado for not knowing what's possibly very obvious.

It is well known that in plain-Ubuntu-land upgrades need to be done sequentially (skipping releases in not possible). But what about in Mint, especially since the "Fresh" upgrade method exists and is the recommended one?

The reason I'm asking is because I have a machine running Mint 11 Katya, and being extremely happy with it I do not want to upgrade just yet to Lisa. This machine serves as a media center, so it's pretty much an appliance: the idea is "set it and forget it". So for stability and support I'd prefer to wait until the next release, which will be LTS.

Hence the original question: Can I skip a release when upgrade time comes?
Thanks!

Linux Mint is funded by ads and donations.

Certainly

As the adage goes, if it ain't broke, don't fix it.

If you're running a stable production build and stability is important, then definitely stay there.

What you will miss by not doing the upgrade may be the latest wiz-bang version of apps and ability to see all kinds of stuff flying around your desktop.

Case in point, I'm running a very mature Mint 10 as my production ops. This version is used a lot for work-work where I absolutely need stabilty (helps pay for the free beer). I am willing to have this ops go to end of life in support if needed for the sake of stability.

Until I'm 95% certain that the replacement ops can provide this repeatability of performance that I now get in Mint 10, I am not moving my production ops to some other vintage.
