Mac computers having no sound is common on Linux, as Apple uses modified soundcards. Please post the following:
  • The subsystem of the audio device from:
    Code: Select all
    lspci -knn
  • The output of:
    Code: Select all
    cat /proc/asound/card0/codec* | grep Codec
In case you don't yet know, you need the terminal (which is in the menu) to run those commands.

I also have an ATI Radion 5770 series. Compiz works fine on KDE only. Somtimes with Gnome. I ordered an Invidea GForce to solve this issue.
Will write mor on that later.

I am thinking since I'm using the DVI port, I'm not going to get sound unless I get a screen with speakers.

You need to connect either an audio cable or HDMI to get sound, unless your computer has built-in speakers. Some graphics cards that lack HDMI, can use sound when you connect a HDMI converter cable to the DVI output.
You can just use the audio jacks, however, to connect speakers when your screen is HDMI or DVI.

If the sound won't work on your audio jacks (this does not apply to HDMI/DVI), then you can run this:
Code: Select all
gksudo gedit /etc/modprobe.d/alsa-base.conf

In the text editor which opens, please put this line:
Code: Select all
options snd-hda-intel model=macpro
.

tried the first code and gedit came up with 2 tabs and the second tab keeps loading. There is nowhere to put the second code in the first tab...
I did this in both KDE and Gnome. Same result. I may not get it, I just learned about this stuff this year.

That the second tab keeps loading is indeed true.

On the first tab, you should just add options snd-hda-intel model=macpro at the end of the file on a new line.

This is what gedit says at the bottom now. It seems other stuff in there is editable. What can you make of this Sir?
I am starting to see how to use this site. I found how to post the codes.

There is headphones in front 1/8' pinjack. There is speakers in the back 1/8' pinjack. There is another next to the speakers 1/8' pinjack. There is a symbol next to it that looks kinda like this, >o<... there is an on board speaker but i get nothing from any of those ports on any sysem settings.
Apple can't help but they do say I may be on the cusp of getting it. Very frustrating. Somewhat fun to defeat this little problem. "If" I defeat this problem!!! With help of course.

The whole alsa-base.conf file is indeed editable, but I don't think the other code needs editing. If sound still won't work (with speakers connected to the audio jack on the back) after rebooting, then please replace macpro with one of these options:
Code: Select all
mb5
macmini3
mba21
mbp3
imac24
imac91
mb31

That are all options available for Apple Macs with Realtek ALC88x chips. I think macpro is most likely to work, but you might need another option on your specific MacPro model as there are four different MacPro's which don't all have an ALC889A.

I tried the gksudo gedit /etc/modprobe.d/alsa-base.conf and it is not going to gedit now. Not sure why. I think it knows that I am getting close, Haha
Is there a problem with gedit maybe?
For now though I thank you for your help & time.
I may be lost but I do not seem to feel that way! THANX!
Gedit came up with Gnome but not KDE.
I agree with you on the MacPro option. I have some work todo though.

Is there any reason that gedit does not come up anymore from terminal. gksudo gedit /etc/modprobe.d/alsa-base.conf?
Im am in terminal and I get to the password and it just does not come up. The file is there because I know where to find it. I just can't save if I open any other way. Any ideas?

You are logged into KDE now? gksudo and gedit? Try instead the KDE alternatives to these GNOME applications, for example:
Code: Select all
kdesu kate /etc/modprobe.d/alsa-base.conf

Linux Mint 14 Nadia / 64-bit / Cinnamon

That didn't work on the KDE side. ( Reinstalled GEDIT and it now works again!!!) I will probably not give up on sound with these great OS's, but the fun is wearing off. At some point I'd like to just use these OS's. Windows Blows, I will NEVER purchase another windows box again. I'm ok with waiting for an update or even a rewrite. I may even install a sound card.

Have you already set options snd-hda-intel model=macpro in alsa-base.conf?

Sorry, we also can't help it that Apple uses modified soundcards. For many Macs it's working automatically, but apparently not yet on the MacPro 5,1.

You can help us to get it working in future. Please tell us if model=macpro works at you. If you've found a working setting, please post the subsystem ID, which is at the top of the output of:
Code: Select all
cat /proc/asound/card0/codec#0

With that information, I can submit the model= setting which works at you to the kernel, then it'll work automatically on your MacPro in future versions (won't yet reach mint 13 however).

Yesir, followed directions closely, to no avail. Do you or anyone else know a good cheap PCIe sound card?
If I did put a sound card in, would that fix my problem :?: ?

Yes it will. At least, if your new soundcard works with Linux.

That's what I was hoping. It's not just PCI it's PCIe, that's why I started here with my question. It seems that some computer stores can not answer some questions
Do you or anyone else know a good cheap PCIe sound card?
Thanks Albert, You guys do great work...
Linux Mint Gnome is where i started back in Gloria. I was blown away by it all. Then I found Compiz and was hooked. Fire in compiz was later dropped  Linux is just a well made and beautiful way to get a computer up and running.
I found mac and love it. But don't think that I don't know that it is UNIX based. That is why it is so stable.
Linux Still does more in most areas and it does it free.

The closest sound-card I could find is a:
Creative Labs SB1040 PCI Express Sound Blaster X-Fi Xtreme Audio Sound Card.

Also ordered by accident a
Syba 7.1 Surround Sound 24 Bit PCI-e Audio Card with Optical In and Out Sound Cards (SD-PEX63034).

Is there support for these? Almost certain the first one is a hit. If not, What should I do?

What should I set alsabase to?
Thanks in advance :D
