DVD-Shrink?

Postby RevLouM on Fri Mar 09, 2012 9:49 pm

Apologies if this is the wrong spot!

Anyone use this application?

Not that I would dream of doing anything illegal with it, (I'm FAR too straight-laced for that), but I would like to know A: Does it work, and, specifically B: Does it work well with Brasero?

Thanks!

Many of us use native Linux apps like this one : http://k9copy.sourceforge.net/web/index.php/en/

I use DeVeDe. There's a bug that requires you to use a menu but you can make the menu skip to the first title so that you don't see the menu at all, so it ends up working okay.

Thank you both!

Just "Apt-got" K-9, with it's tree,(LOTS of "previously deselected" stuff with THAT one!). Since it was the first suggestion. Though I'm generally not a fan of stuff with a "k" in front, I'll give it a go.

I'll get to DeVeDe in a few minutes, and let you know later on.

Thanks again.

You might also want to check dvd95 (in Package Manager). This app is specifically for copying double density (9GB) DVDs to standard (4.7GB) dvds.

I use both DVDShrink and DVDDecryptor under WINE, and both work great for ripping my discs to drive so that i can handbrake loose on the results. :)

What do you need to know exactly?

For those wondering, I find it much quicker and less stressful to let either of this rip the contents to drive, and let Handbrake work from there, rather than tie up the optical drive for ages while handbrake does it's work. Plus, they strip the region-encoding crap from them. :)

You can also use the dvdrip program from the repo to rip your DVD's - I think it can also set a maximum filesize.

DVD Shrink works well under Wine.
I set it to create an ISO and you can burn that with Brasero.

I've been trying out ripping programs but I'm still looking for a good GNOME equiv. to K9Copy.

I am going to have to proceed a little slowly, but here's some back..

On one DVD in particular there are selectable languages, (6), and selectable subtitling languages, (24)...I was tickled pink to find "localepurge" to save a few hundred MB from some distros...I was hoping to do the same thing...for some reason, the aforementioned files take up over 1.5GB! Methinks they're inflated a bit to "deter" something...

Still wokin' on it...thanks all!
