Mint 12 Mouse (and maybe keyboard) Problems

Postby Chaos89 on Tue Mar 13, 2012 7:35 pm

Ok, so I've been looking for this for a while now, with no luck so far. When I start up Mint and log in, everything works fine for about 20 seconds, and then suddenly I can't click on anything at all. Occasionally it comes back for a few seconds, or for a click or two, then stops working again. This is very recent (last night) install of Mint 12 Lisa (KDE 4.7.4) 64 Bit, with near-default settings. This is a custom built (by me) computer, and I'm not sure if specs would help here, but I should note that I have an SSD and an HD that run Windows with boot on SSD and user files on HD, and this has caused me problems in the past. If you want specs or any more information, just ask. I'm new to Mint, but not to Linux (or at least UNIX), so don't hesitate to give complicated suggestions. I'm trying to get Mint up and running smoothly so I can finally make Windows a SECONDARY operating system, just to use for games that need DirectX. :D

Linux Mint is funded by ads and donations.

Same problem here running Acer Aspire One 722 netbook. However, I have set-up as dual boot and if I boot into W7 first, then reboot without powering down into Lisa then all is fine!

No luck so far. It seems that I can right-click on the desktop and click on the taskbar (is that what it's called in Mint?) more often than on windows (as in windows in Mint, not M$ Windows), but if i open the Start Menu (again, Mint terminology?), I can't click on anything again. The keyboard works most of the time, though I think it occasionally drops out. I'm not sure if this is a driver issue, since they both work on and off, just not consistently. Is there a way I can check for those? I looked on the hardware section of the Linux Mint website, but I didn't see anything for my models.

Also, perhaps unrelated, all of the fans in my case run at full speed once the OS boots, and I'm not sure if this is just because they're set to that by the OS, or because the processor is overheating. Is there a way I can check processor activity in Mint?

Fans: If you want to check temp of cpu etc.. do a

Code: Select all
sudo apt-get install lm-sensors

from the terminal then type Sensors say yes to everything. once you have done this you should be able to see fan speed etc...
You may want to check your bios for fan settings as well.

With regards to your keyboard(try another one) also see if it works in the terminal push ctrl+f3 and see if you can login and type stuff.
Also check for other driver issues. Right now i've fixed an issue that caused the whole OS to freeze while doing a download, stupid wifi driver.
I also have problems where just the gui freezes, i can move the mouse but do nothing else, i reboot from the terminal(ctrl+f3) , this i think is down to the graphics driver in my opinion, but not sure.

I really want to like this os and get away from windows but so far its a pain in the ****!
