Another Newbie to the Linux Mint Forum

Hello Everyone,

You can call me animaguy. My real name isn't top secret but I like to keep a psuedonym for the sake of mutual privacy.

I started to explore linux several years ago. My sister gave me a small laptop that only had a half a gig of ram. I bought a book with a disk. The disk had several Linux OSs in it. Not all the OSs could load into the laptop and I didn't have reliable access to the internet. So my Linux evolution was put on indefinite hiatus.

Now, I have a smartphone and can log in anytime I want. Plus, my brother gave me an Inspiron E1450 with 1 gig of ram. The XP OS was pretty much melted down and my brother just wanted to get rid of it. So before sending the laptop to e-waste heaven with my sister's antique HP, I decided to re-investigate Linux. I googled for Ubuntu and randomly found Linux Mint. I guiltily admit that the name Mint sounded appealing. So I downloaded the iso with the KDE desktop and burnt it into a DVDRW. I wiped out the old OS and loaded "Lisa" into the Dell.

I loved what I saw but I did try a copy of Fedora and I decided to go with Mint 12.

I loaded it several times and updated it and installed several packages just for the heck of it. Yes, I did it several times. I didn't notice at first but I started to get two consistent error messages. I joined the forum, posted a question and read the manual and then I did an advanced search with a couple of key words, found a couple of threads related to my issue and realized that this forum has it's stuff together.

My issue has to do with maildir not being valid and Nepomuk being disabled.

I will read more about these issues but if anyone already knows my situation, I am all ears.

So I saw the Introduce Yourself topic and here I am.

Ok, pretty amazingly boring for a computer nerd.

So that is my story. I like to explore EVERYTHING! And I may be a noob on this forum now, but I won't be a noob forever. I will try and enjoy it while it lasts.

I hope you can resolve the problems you have and will continue to enjoy using it Sounds like you have a pretty awesome family, if your siblings randomly give you gear Your sister's antique HP should run Linux Mint LXDE fine, or if not there are lots of Linux distros that specifically target older computers. Don't throw it out yet

Be sure also to check out the Community website (ideas, tutorials, and hardware and software reviews). You can also chat in real-time with other Linux Mint users. In the Mint Menu, in the Internet section, start the application XChat IRC. You will automatically get connected to #linuxmint-chat for general chat and #linuxmint-help for support with other Linux Mint users

My brother is a senior level computer scientist for NASA and a 1 gb ram laptop is small potatoes for him. He is just helping me out so I can learn. Kinda like here at this forum. Hopefully I can payback both my brother and the Linux open source community.

Welcome to the Mint Forums, animaguy. Keep in mind that everything you have to learn gives you another thing with which you can help others.

With a 1GB RAM system, I would also suggest a lighter weight desktop, such as lxxde or xfce, even if they are missing some of the full GUI applications that are considered more user friendly

As to kde mail and neopunk errors..

Sometimes fixing such problems may require digging into config (*.txt type files) and making changes, but always save your current file, if you intend to try that, since you may need to restore it if there is any problem..

--if it is kmail2 they (kde) changed their options for kmail that caused those type of issues

--I would always turn of any system indexing (strigi), it slows down the system and I personally don't think it is ever necessary on a desktop

The only reason to use such a service seems to me to require heavy searches on the system for multiple patterns, where indexing files might help
--other than that it nothing more than a hindrance..

Thanks for the info. I am considering downloading a version of Linux Mint w/xfcu. I have now made it a top priority to learn Linux with Linux Mint.

As far as the neopunk issue. Fixing the problem is my top priority.

My top priority is to become an expert at taking any laptop, installing Linux Mint and getting the Wifi to work.

I am happy to tell you what I think I know but don't be surprised if the more experienced members of this forum quickly but respectfully correct me if I am incorrect.

Me too, I joined the forum about 3 to 4 years ago but I am still new to this and do enjoy my moments with my LINUX family. I do have an old HP 1150 laptop that I am planning to give away to someone that needs it and I want to install a Mint that will work goo in that old laptop, any ideas? It is good to meet you all here.
