How to install Canon scanner?

Post by DaComboMan »

Tried using WineTricks but that didn't do the trick!

When i plugin the scanner nothing happens.
KDE picked up my HP printer and installed it quicker than Windows 7 (which also needed a setup file).

Tried using my installation CD with WineTricks but that didn't help.

Linux is not Windows, so Windows approaches can cause unnecessary grief.

Install Xsane and see if you can scan. My bet is that it will "just work."

Canon is well known for its bad support under Linux. However, a solution for your driver issue can be found here: http://sites.google.com/site/tipsandtri ... on-drivers.

Thanks nomko, will have to investigate that.

It's not a big emergency, but it is nevertheless an unpleasant one.

None of those Canon drivers are available for Linux.

Perhaps LinuxMint should set up a sticky list of scanners and printers that have drivers compatible with their OS.

Can you tell us which model/type Canon device you have?? Then we can check for a better solution.

CanoScan LiDE 70
I'll check that site myself for any drivers. Maybe on other forums there's a solution.

After a few flights on the web, i found this thread:

Lide70 might be a "cheap" scanner, but i sure don't plan on getting a new one at this stage of the game.

Typically if you go to Canon's EU site, you can get drivers. I had a Lide30 that "just worked" as mentioned above.

You're right Kevin, it works for 30 (but not for later versions like 70).

Try this.

I can help you with installation instructions later but most likely you'll extract the files and run an install script.

*Edit*

Disregard. This was where I got drivers for my MX410 but looks like there's no hits for the Lide 70.

Thanks Kevin.

Nice try, but no results for CanoScan Lide70
They have it for Windows but not for Linux.

Someone is going to have to explain to me in plain language what this means:

"Happy to report I can run my Canon LIDE 70 under Win XP pro as a guest on Vmware 6, using a Samba share folder to share the scans between XP and Linux"
Posted on: http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php? ... can+Lide70

1. I found VMware to download at Oracle (there's about 25 different programs, which one is right?).
2. What's a Samba share folder?
