Black screen after boot.

Postby alp on Tue Mar 13, 2012 8:16 pm

My computer no longer shows a login screen after boot, just a black screen. If I press ALT+CTRL+F3 during the black screen, I have access to terminal commands, but I don't know where to start looking for problems.

I was using Linux Mint 12 64-bit.

Any help would be appreciated.

OK, Linux Mint uses a black screen by default.
Of course, if you install Lubuntu through Linux Mint, you will get the Lubuntu splash screen.

My concern is that it no longer starts the gui, in my case gnome shell. There was usually a login screen after booting, but waiting for some 2-3 minutes nothing happens and it stays at a black screen.

I should also say that I installed the icecat browser prior to this situation, I had to install several files in order for the program to build, but at the moment I don't recall their names.

Hi!

This sounds a bit out of my capacity but you can check your package history from the command line.

Package history:
Code: Select all
cat /var/log/dpkg.log

This will show the packages you've removed:
Code: Select all
cat /var/log/dpkg.log | grep "\ remove\ "

A longshot maybe... do you get any message from trying to switch to the xsession the normal way?
Code: Select all
ALT+CTRL+F7

I've had installs bug out on me like that and then start working again after trying to boot some ten times or more. :?

Pressing ALT+CTRL+F7 does nothing while the screen is blank.

I tried the removal history command and it returned something like this:
Code: Select all
2012-03-12 16:03:33 remove cinelerra 1:2.2-0.3~ppa1~oneiric1 <none>

I have installed and uninstalled cinelerra before, but I'm not sure what the rest of this text means.
